Abbreviated Procedures for the Proper Relocation of Kataoka Shrine First, the head priest (shinshū), assistant priests (negi), ritual specialists (hafuri), ceremonial attendants (tengū), and clan members (ujibito) engage in seventeen days of devotional retreat at the shrine grounds. The day before, the Bureau of Carpentry (Mokuryo) constructs temporary halls and curtained enclosures in the sacred courtyard. {{Marginal note: Tama Bridge, east of the river}} On the same day, the Master of Onmyōdō purifies the area in front of the main hall. On the day itself, shrine officials and clan members proceed to the main hall to decorate the inner and outer sacred spaces. {{Marginal note: Shrine officials wear ceremonial robes and caps, clan members wear purification robes}} During this time, the Palace Maintenance Bureau hangs half-curtains, the Bureau of Carpentry hangs patterned curtains, and the Palace Cleaning Bureau spreads out mat pathways and cloth coverings. Before the appointed time, the head priest, assistant priests, ritual specialists, ceremonial attendants, and clan members take their positions at the shrine grounds. {{Marginal note: Shrine officials wear court dress, clan members wear purification robes}} Next, a secretary delivers the imperial edict to the assistant priest at the north eaves of the bridge hall, and the assistant priest receives and holds it up for divine viewing. Next, shrine servants are made to summon the controller and other officials three times to attend. Next, the controller and other officials serve at the shrine grounds, dismounting outside the first torii and entering through the second torii. At this time, the shrine officials line up at the side of the torii; when the controller bows once, the shrine officials bow in return. The head priest comes out to greet them under the north eaves of the細殿 (hosodono), the controller bows once, the head priest bows in return, and the controller and other officials take their seats. Next, the head priest, assistant priests, ritual specialists, ceremonial attendants, and clan members take their seats outside the curtains, while the assembled shrine officials and clan members take their seats in front of the tower gate. Next, the divine offerings proceed and are temporarily carried to the橘殿 (Tachibanadono), where the Master of Onmyōdō performs purification rites. Next, the head priest has the assistant priest inquire whether preparations are complete. Next, the head priest advances to the controller's seat to inquire whether the shrine relocation may proceed, receives the command, and withdraws. Next, the assistant priests, ritual specialists, ceremonial attendants, and clan members take their seats inside the curtains before the sacred space. {{Marginal note: In front of the main hall}} Next, after the Master of Onmyōdō finishes purifying the sacred treasures, he purifies the bodies of the shrine officials and clan members. Next, officials are made to extinguish fires in various places and to warn against and stop loud voices among the assembled people. Next, the supervising master presents the sacred key to the ritual specialist.
