雀鷂（ツグミ）はその味が特に優れており、鷹匠の家では「三つ物」と称するものは、雀鷂（ツグミ）・赤腹（アカハラ）・鵯（ヒヨドリ）のことである。鳩に次ぐ美味とされる。ツグミは各家にて秋から冬の間に多く捕らえ、味噌に漬けて節分の節物とする。これに豆を加えて祝儀とする。「豆に次ぐ身（ツクミ）」という俗語もある。また、ツグミは疫病をよく避けるともいう。ツグミには数種類があり、「真（マ）ツグミ」と呼ばれるものは〇テウマ（江戸の呼称）である。〇磯ツグミは色が青みがかっており、海辺に生息する。〇白ツグミ。〇眉白（マミジロ）。〇赤腹（アカハラ）。〇八丈ツグミ——秋に渡ってくる、毛が柿色で、島テウマとも言う。〇眉白ツグミは色が黒く、目の上に白い筋があり、日光方面から現れる。雌は虎斑（とらふ）模様である。特に雛の時は黒く、カラスのように時を経て黒くなる。腹の照りが赤いものは赤腹という。白ツグミは腹が白く、背が茶色で、「茶ジナイ」とも言う。ツグミは「鬼ツグミ」「虎ツグミ」ともいい、赤茶色の虎斑模様がある。

The Jakuyō (Tsugumi / Thrush) is particularly fine in flavor. Among falconers' households, the "Three Things" (mitsumono) refers to the Tsugumi (Thrush), the Akaharа (Red-bellied Thrush), and the Hiyodori (Brown-eared Bulbul). It is considered second only to the pigeon in taste. In many households, large numbers are caught between autumn and winter, pickled in miso, and served as a seasonal food for Setsubun. Combined with beans, this becomes a celebratory offering. There is also a folk expression, "second to the beans is the 'tsukumi' (body)," a pun on the name. It is also said that the Tsugumi has the power to ward off epidemic diseases. There are several varieties of Tsugumi: the "Ma-Tsugumi" (True Thrush) is the ○Teuma; the ○Iso-Tsugumi (Shore Thrush) has a bluish coloring and lives along the seacoast; ○Shiro-Tsugumi (White Thrush); ○Mamijiro (White-browed Thrush); ○Akahara (Red-bellied Thrush); and ○Hachijō-Tsugumi — which arrives in autumn, has persimmon-colored plumage, and is also called the Shima-Teuma (Island Teuma). The ○Mamijiro-Tsugumi is dark in color with a white stripe above the eye, and appears from the direction of Nikkō; the female has a tiger-striped pattern. Notably, chicks are black, and, like crows, they darken over time. Those with a reddish sheen on the belly are called Akahara (Red-bellied). The Shiro-Tsugumi has a white belly and brown back, also called "Cha-Jinai." The Tsugumi is also called "Oni-Tsugumi" (Demon Thrush) or "Tora-Tsugumi" (Tiger Thrush), and has reddish-brown tiger-striped markings.
