方目　《割書：大バン｜　》

本草曰方目ハ護水鳥也常￣ニ在＿二田沢￣ノ中￣ニ＿一
見￣レハ＿レ 人￣ヲ輙鳴喚￣シテ不＿レ去漁人呼￣テ為＿二烏鶏￣ト＿一

現代語訳

【オオバン】

方目　〈大バン〉

『本草』に曰く、方目（オオバン）は水を護る鳥なり。常に田や沢の中に在り、人を見れば、すぐに鳴き叫んで去らず。漁師はこれを呼んで「烏鶏（うけい）」とする。

【Ōban (Eurasian Coot)】

Hōmoku　〈Ōban / Large Ban〉

According to the Bencao [Gangmu], the hōmoku (Eurasian Coot) is a bird that guards the water. It always dwells within rice paddies and marshes, and when it sees a person, it immediately cries out and calls without retreating. Fishermen call it "Ukei" (烏鶏, "black chicken").
