羽ノ名白キ鳧（カモノ）ヨウナレトモ此黒鳧
老スレハ觜ノ先皆白色トナル故ニ此ハ角

黒カモ又黒トリト云海ニアリ性甚
味アシヽ不＿レ可＿レ食ハジロハ味クロ鳧

【ハジロ（羽白）】
黒野鴨（一種、ハジロと云う、江戸産）
江戸ではこの鳥を「羽白（ハジロ）」と呼ぶが、この鳥の羽は白くない。「羽白」とは本来、羽の白いカモ（鳧）のことを指すが、この黒いカモ（黒鳧）は老いると嘴の先が皆白色になる。それゆえ、この「嘴白（くちばしのしろ）」を通称して「ハジロ（端白）」と呼ぶのである。また、一種、深い黒色のものがあり、「黒カモ」あるいは「黒鳥」とも呼ばれ、海に生息する。その性質は甚だしく味が悪く、食べるべきではない。ハジロは黒鳧（クロカモ）より味が勝っており、食べることができる。
天保九年戊戌歳正月五日に入手し、翌六日より筆を起こして実物を写す。

【Hajiro (White-winged Duck)】
Black Wild Duck — (A species called "Hajiro"; from Edo)
In Edo, this bird is called "Hajiro" (羽白, "white-winged"), yet its wings are not actually white. The term "Hajiro" originally refers to a duck (kamo) with white wings, but this black duck (kuro-kamo) develops a completely white tip on its bill as it ages. For this reason, this "white bill-tip" (hashiro/hashijiro) has come to be commonly known as "Hajiro" (端白, "white-tipped"). There is also a variety that is a deep, uniform black, called "Kuro-kamo" (black duck) or "Kuro-tori" (black bird), which lives in the sea. This variety has a very unpleasant taste and should not be eaten. The Hajiro, however, surpasses the Kuro-kamo in flavor and is fit for consumption.
Obtained on the 5th day of the first month of the year Tsuchinoe-Inu (戊戌), Tenpō 9 [1838]; began drawing from life on the following 6th day.
