加賀ノ国白山権現ノ山中ニ雷ト云虫アリ
形蛙ノ如シ此虫春ニ至テ多ク出ル年ハ又
雷モ多カリ土人是ヲ見ル時ハ打殺サズト
云コトナシ彼ノ鳥好ミテ雷ノ虫ヲ食フ依テ
雷鳥ト名付クト云々コワ雷除ト云義

加賀国の白山権現の山中に「雷」と呼ばれる虫がいる。その形は蛙のようである。この虫は春になると多く出現し、その年は雷も多いという。土地の人々はこの虫を見かけたとき、必ず打ち殺すという。かの鳥（雷鳥）はこの雷の虫を好んで食べる。それゆえ「雷鳥」と名付けたと言われている。しかしこれは「雷除け」という意味にこじつけた、土地の人々による俗説であろう。

## From the *Raishinkī* (Record of Thunder) — Continued

In the mountains of Hakusan Gongen in Kaga Province, there exists an insect called "Rai" (Thunder). Its form resembles that of a frog. When this insect emerges in great numbers in spring, it is said that there will also be much thunder that year. The local people, upon seeing this insect, never fail to beat it to death. The bird in question (the Rock Ptarmigan) is fond of eating these "thunder insects." It is therefore said that the bird came to be called *Raichō* ("Thunder Bird"). However, this is likely a folk explanation fabricated by local people, derived from the notion of "warding off thunder."
