『月令広義』によれば：
**報春鳥**（ハルツゲドリ）〔春を告げる鳥〕
- 別名「婆餅焦（ばへいしょう）」とも言う
- 石川丈山は「剖葦（ぼうい）」をウグイスとする
- 本邦では誤って「鸎（おう）」と訓読みする
- 『月令』では **倉庚**（そうこう）
- 『爾雅』では **商庚**
- 『詩経』（待径）では **黄鳥**
- 『説文』では **黄鸝**（こうり）
- 『左伝』では **青鳥**

## 【キツツキ（啄木鳥）】
〔絵はアカゲラか〕
『爾雅』出典：
**啄木鳥**（たくぼくちょう）〔テラツツキ・キツツキ・木タタキ・アカゲラ〕
- **䴕木**〔爾雅〕 **鴷**〔同上〕
- くちばしは錐（きり）のようにして長さ数寸、常に木に登り虫を食らう。木を啄むもので、青色にして頭が赤いものを「アオゲラ」という。また「オオアカゲラ（鬼ゲラ）」あり、形状はやや大きい。また「コゲラ（小ゲラ）」あり。

According to the *Yueling Guangyi* (月令広義):
**Hōshun-chō** ("Spring-Announcing Bird") 〔Japanese reading: *Harutsuge-dori*〕
- Also called "*Babing Jiao*" (婆餅焦)
- Ishikawa Jōzan identifies "*Pōi*" (剖葦) as the Uguisu
- In Japan, it is erroneously read as "*Ō*" (鸎)
- In the *Yueling* (月令): **Cānggēng** (倉庚)
- In the *Erya* (爾雅): **Shānggēng** (商庚)
- In the *Shijing* (詩経, "Book of Songs"): **Huáng niǎo** (黄鳥, "Yellow Bird")

## 【Woodpecker (*Picus* spp.)】
〔The illustration appears to depict a Great Spotted Woodpecker (*Dendrocopos major*)〕
From the *Erya*:
**Takuboku-chō** (啄木鳥) 〔Also called: *Teratsutsuki*, *Kitsutsuki*, *Kitataki*, *Akagera*〕
- **Liùmù** 䴕木 〔Erya〕; **Liè** 鴷 〔same source〕
- Its beak is like an awl, several *sun* in length. It habitually climbs trees to eat insects by pecking at the wood. Those of blue-green color with a red head are called "*Aogera*" (Green Woodpecker). There is also the "*Onigera*" (Great Spotted Woodpecker), which is somewhat larger in form. There is also the "*Kogera*" (Small Woodpecker / Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker).
