現代語訳
「母親が止める」
「あれ、勘弁してくれよ。今日は先祖の命日だから、それでは善の首が手の内にすることも皆無になってしまうよ」
「悪の首は非常に短気で我が儘で、内の召使いなどを邪険に扱い、少しの過ちがあっても打ち叩いたりして、日々悪念がいよいよ増していった」
「善の首は常に慈悲と善言を好み、『もあるまい二つかみ』、毎朝修行であるいは托鉢、非人などに手の内を出し、また貧しい者を憐れんだりなどして、多くの徳を施していた」
「しかしながら、このように善の首が慈悲をするそばから、悪の首が罪を作る。人の心も皆このようなもので、慎むべきことである」
【物乞いたちの台詞】
「米なら各別、四文銭なら丸で一文下さい。ましこし、私は釣鐘へ金立てじゃ」

「小僧よ、我が手は小さくて何ほどもあるまい。二つかみずつ進ぜよう」

"Oh, please forgive me. Today is the memorial day of our ancestors, so if that's the case, everything the good head does will come to nothing."
"The evil head was extremely short-tempered and selfish, treating the household servants harshly, and even for small mistakes would beat them, so that evil thoughts increased day by day."
"The good head always favored compassion and good words, and every morning through religious practice, or alms-giving to beggars and outcasts, would give from his means, and also show pity for the poor, thus cultivating much virtue."
"However, even as the good head practiced compassion, the evil head would create sins. All human hearts are like this, and it is something we should be cautious about."
