現代語訳
ある日、思案橋という橋を渡っていた時のこと、善の首は寺参りに行こうと思い、悪の首は遊郭で遊ぼうと思った。心は二つ、身体は一つで、行きつ戻りつ心が迷って思案にくれ、互いに「えいや」と引っ張り合った。力比べでは善の首の筋が強かったらしく、ついに悪の首をなだめて、寺参りに行ったのであった。
善の首が言うには：
「若い時に楽しみすぎると、年老いてから苦労するものだ。やめにしなさい」
悪の首が言うには：
「何と、人間はわずか五十年だぞ。時には命の洗濯もしなければならない」
ある時、善の首が少しまどろんでいると、悪の首がたちまち目を皿のようにして「良い機会だ」と友達を誘って酒屋に行き、酒を飲んだが、酒の上で友達と喧嘩を始め、互いに打ち合い争い合った。
悪の首は大いに怒り、悪念がますます起こったが、善の首は何も知らずに眠っており、この騒ぎを少しも知らなかった。酒が完全に醒めてから目を覚まして、大いに後悔した。
「糞とも思わないと言われては、俺の男が立たない」
「やれやれ、またするな。どうしてもっと早く善の首殿が目を覚ましてくれればよかったのに」
英語訳
One day, while crossing a bridge called Shian-bashi (Contemplation Bridge), the good head wanted to go to temple worship, while the evil head wanted to go have fun at the pleasure quarters. With two minds but one body, going back and forth, the heart was confused and lost in contemplation, pulling each other with cries of "heave-ho!" In the contest of strength, the good head's sinews seemed stronger, and finally pacified the evil head and went to temple worship.
The good head said:
"If you indulge too much in pleasures when young, you will suffer when you grow old. Stop this behavior."
The evil head said:
"What! Human life is only fifty years. Sometimes one must refresh one's spirit."
One time, when the good head was dozing a little, the evil head immediately opened his eyes wide like saucers and said "this is a good opportunity," invited his friends to go to a sake house and drank sake. But over drinks he started a fight with his friends, and they beat and struck each other in conflict.
The evil head became greatly enraged and evil thoughts arose more and more, but the good head was sleeping peacefully and knew nothing of this disturbance. After the sake had completely worn off, he woke up and greatly regretted it.
"When told that I'm thought of as nothing, my manhood cannot stand it."
"Oh no, don't do this again. If only the good head had awakened earlier, this would have been better."
