現代語訳
寝ては起きの繰り返しは我が身にかかる例えのように、悪の首は善の首を長年いじめて、我が両分の身体まで痛めて難儀したが、これより二つの首は大いに不和となった。
善の首が飯を食おうと思えば、悪の首は髪を結わんと思い、善の首が疲労で寒くなり、着る物を一つ着ようと思えば、悪の首は片肌脱いで扇を使う。善の首が寺参りに行こうと思えば、悪の首は釣りに行こうと思う。悪の首が初鰹の刺身で献酒を飲もうとすれば、善の首は干物で茶漬けを食う。
何事も真逆でめちゃくちゃで、我が身でありながら我が心の思うままにならず、大いに不自由な身体となってしまった。
「思うに人の心もまた、このような例が多い。我が心が我が身を責め、我が身体が我が心の思うままにならないことは、皆これ一つの心が正しくないためである」

英語訳
Like the metaphor of how sleeping and waking affects one's own body, the evil head had long tormented the good head, causing pain and hardship even to their shared body. From this point on, the two heads became greatly at odds.
When the good head wanted to eat rice, the evil head wanted to tie up his hair. When the good head became cold from fatigue and wanted to put on clothing, the evil head would bare one shoulder and use a fan. When the good head wanted to go to temple, the evil head wanted to go fishing. When the evil head tried to drink sake with first bonito sashimi, the good head ate tea over rice with dried fish.
Everything was contradictory and chaotic - despite being their own body, it would not follow their own will, becoming a greatly inconvenient body.
"I think that human hearts often have such examples as well. When one's own heart torments one's own body, and one's own body does not follow one's heart's desires - all of this is because one's heart is not righteous."
