現代語訳
桃右衛門夫婦は両頭の男子を設けて大いに悲しみ、我が子ほど不憫に思うのは人情の常であるから、成長の後は出家させて親子の罪を滅ぼそうと思い、大切に抱えて労わりながら養い育てた。
【妻の台詞】
♪この子は乳も四つ飲まなくては間に合いません。
この子が成長するにつれ、右の頭は色白く、鼻筋が通って、顔立ちが良く面貌も上品に生まれついた。左の頭は色黒く、鼻が平たく、目が大きくて、はなはだ悪相である。
この母が前年拾ったところの桃の実が、一つは甘く一つは苦くあったのは、かかる異形の子を産むべき知らせであったのだろう。
【悪の首の台詞】
♪蔵の屋根に雀が巣を作っているよ。早く手習いを終わらせて捕りましょう。ああ退屈だ。
【善の首の台詞】
手習いは坂に車を押すようなもので、油断をしてはならないとお師匠様がおっしゃった。
♪思うに二つの頭をこのように善悪・邪正に分かちて産みつけなさったことは、おそらく天道が人を戒めなさる御譬えであろう。
英語訳
The couple Momoemon and his wife, having had a two-headed son, were greatly saddened. Since it is human nature to feel pity for one's own child, they thought that after he grew up, they would make him become a monk to expiate the sins of parent and child, and so they carefully embraced, cherished, and raised him.
【Wife's dialogue】
♪This child needs to drink milk from four breasts to be satisfied.
As this child grew up, the right head was fair-skinned with a well-defined nose, handsome features, and a refined countenance born naturally to him. The left head was dark-skinned with a flat nose and large eyes, and had an extremely evil appearance.
The fact that the peach this mother had picked up the previous year - one sweet and one bitter - was probably a sign that she would bear such a deformed child.
