現代語訳
昔々のことなので嘘かもしれないが、浅草茅町の辺りに「芦の屋清右衛門」という百万両不言（言わず）と呼ばれた大変な腹黒い金持ちがいた。もとより家の掟は厳しく、贅沢は露ほどもなく、息子の清太郎も厳格な親に育てられ、不自由に暮らしていた。そのため世間の大通（遊び人）と出会うこともできず、いつも身の上をよくよく思って二十一歳まで暮らしていた。
手代の代次は清太郎と同じ年で、子供の時から発明な生まれつきで、清太郎と極めて親しく、いつも憂さを話し合っていた。

英語訳
Long, long ago - so it may be a lie for all we know - in the vicinity of Asakusa Kaya-cho, there lived a man called Ashino-ya Seizaemon, known as "Hyakuman-ryo Fugen" (Silent Million Ryo), a tremendously cunning wealthy man. His household rules were naturally strict, with not a trace of luxury, and his son Seitaro was also raised by his stern father and lived in constraint. Because of this, he could not meet with the world's sophisticates (playboys) and spent his days until age twenty-one constantly pondering his circumstances.
The clerk Daiji was the same age as Seitaro and had been clever by nature since childhood. He was extremely close to Seitaro, and they would always share their troubles with each other.
