This is a verse of praise for the origin and founding of this temple. And how fitting it is — the recitation of the Mahāyāna sutras is the primary cause (shōin) for rebirth in the highest grade (jōbon ōjō) of the Pure Land, and it is one of the three meritorious acts (sanpuku) described in the Contemplation Sutra (Kanmuryōjukyō). How could the merits (tokuyaku) of the Wondrous Sutra be in vain for those who undertake even a single pilgrimage to this place? Upon the end of one's life, to go directly to the golden gate of the world of bliss (the Pure Land) — is that not wonderfully reassuring? That this temple has been designated as the foremost among the pilgrimage sites — if this were not the judgment of a manifestation of the Buddha (gonke), who could possibly arrive at such a determination? One must not regard this with a casual eye.

Principal image: Shō Kannon (Holy Avalokiteśvara) [Side note: Standing image, height one shaku five sun one bu] Carved by Gyōki Bosatsu
Tracing the origins of the principal image, the Holy Kannon, of this temple: The founder of this temple, the Priest Daihō (Daihō Zenji), was a person who combined both wisdom and practice (knowledge and conduct), yet he concealed his light and hid his virtue, possessing a pure and lofty character clear as wind and unbending as upright bamboo. He cut off all food, avoided all grains, and had never, not even for a moment, removed his dharma robes from his body. And yet, whenever someone came to ask him about Zen, he would follow the karmic bond and guide them (toward enlightenment). In this place...
