"Due to the evil karmic retribution of never having taken refuge in the Three Treasures, I fell into the realm of demons (kidō), and there seemed to be no prospect of ever escaping from it. But through the master's instruction, I have come to encounter the Buddha and to understand the value of the Dharma. I am now certain that I shall be freed from this body of a demon-beast. I implore you further: if you would take compassion on me and go out to a place easily accessible to those passing to and fro, and there allow the principal image to form karmic bonds widely with all sentient beings, then both I and all sentient beings shall together attain enlightenment." The master nodded and said: "What you wish for is in accordance with reason and principle. I shall return once more to the place of Ōtana and enshrine the principal image there."

The demon woman rejoiced and presented to the master a bamboo staff she had been carrying, saying: "This is no ordinary object of the human world. Please accept this as today's offering of dāna (charitable gift)." When she had finished speaking, the old woman vanished like smoke, leaving no more trace than the wind through the pines or a cloud drifting across the sky. The Zen master prayed ever more earnestly to the principal image for her liberation, and in later years he built a hall and established it forever as a sacred site of Kannon. The said bamboo staff is kept to this day as a treasure in the temple's treasury. Now, it is written in the *Zhèngfǎ niànjīng* (*Shōhōnen-kyō*, Scroll 16, folio 3): "Women are mostly born into the realm of demons. Why is this so?..."
