[Right page] ...are possessions of the divine spirit (*mitamamoto*).' If that is so, then I too am one among the possessions of the divine spirit. Why then do you say to my face that you begrudge the divine treasures of the gods? If you truly honor the Emperor (*Suberaki*), then you ought first to give alms to me. The Emperor is the father and mother of the people. If I were to starve to death, it would become a source of grief to the Emperor. Have you not heard the saying: 'Here there are sheaves left ungathered, there there are bundles left behind, and here there are fallen ears of grain — these are the rightful benefit of the widow.' If the world offers me no charity now, I shall be driven to become a thief. And if I become a thief, the country will be thrown into disorder. Therefore, if you truly revere the lords of the realm (*kokkō*), you ought first to give alms to me. The gods teach the way of *sumeramutsu kokoro* — the heart of imperial benevolence — and the Buddha preached the equality of self and other (*jita byōdō*). Furthermore, it is written: 'All sentient beings are every one of them my children.' [Left page] For me to witness you now, with your crooked heart, to be set upon wandering through the three realms of existence (*sangai*), would be truly like watching a lost child of my own begetting. How can you claim to honor the people of the divine land, while declaring that you will give nothing to a beggar? You must swiftly rid yourself of this wicked spirit!" — and with these earnest words of admonition and instruction (*kyōkai*), Tange was suddenly stirred to awakening (*hokki*) and burst into tears. "The teachings of the Buddha are truly vast and boundless. From this day forth, I shall enter the Way and reform my heart and purpose. I was born and have yet to pay homage to a single Buddha. I have heard that, when it comes to having the karmic connection (*keen*) to guide and transform sentient beings, nothing surpasses Kannon (*Kanzeon*)."
