[Right page] — remembered, and placed her trust in Kanzeon, crying out: "By your great compassion and merciful vows (*daiji daihi seigan*), pray do not err! Let me be reunited with my wandering child!" With tears streaming down her face, she left her hermitage behind, lamenting her thin and fleeting fate — like the "thin" (*usui*) of Usui Pass — and wandered far and wide until she reached this village. Night having fallen, with no shelter to be had, she collapsed beneath a thicket of summer grasses and dozed off for a while. Then, from behind her, a voice called out repeatedly and urgently. "Oh! Could it be the voice of my child I have been searching for?" she cried, and leapt up — whereupon a brilliant radiance shone forth, and beneath the robe of compassionate forbearance (*ninniku jihi*), [Left page] the lost daughter was sheltered and concealed. Then the august form manifested suddenly before her, and declared: "Your beloved child had fallen under the curse of great demons and the *Takatsu-tori*, and suffered for a time. Because you prayed to me so fervently, I commanded the Twenty-Eight Divine Attendants (*nijūhachi bushū*) to retrieve her, and now I return her to you. See that you do not slacken in your faith." The tears of joy shed by mother and child seemed as though they might rot through the sleeves of the rough hemp robes of Kiso. And so the night gave way to dawn. The villagers came, heard the tale of all that had transpired, and one and all were filled with a sense of wonder and awe —
