(Continued from previous page) …reciting sutras, and repenting of the deep and grave sins that her husband had committed during his lifetime. She expressed her gratitude to the monk who lived in the mountains, then departed from before the principal image and took shelter at a farmhouse in the vicinity. From time to time she would offer incense and flowers at the burial mound, devoting herself wholly to performing memorial rites for her husband's spirit. It so happened that a cow at the farmhouse where this woman had taken shelter gave birth to a single calf. This calf's affection for the woman was like that of a young child longing for its mother, and there was not a single person who witnessed this and did not find it strange. The woman and her daughter grew fond of this cow, and whenever they went to pay their respects at her late husband's burial mound, they would always lead the cow along with them. One day, when the cow arrived at the vicinity of the burial mound, it suddenly lay down and would not move. The mother and daughter found this strange and tried to make it rise again, whereupon the cow lifted its head, shed tears, and suddenly spoke in human words, saying: "You must not be startled. I am the reincarnated form of your husband, so-and-so. Through the evil and wickedness of my former life, I have wandered through the three evil realms of existence, and now find myself once again in such a form as this. Yet I count it a blessing, at least, to have been born in this place and to meet with you again. I ask that you both, mother and daughter, take it to heart and make offerings morning and evening to Kannon Bodhisattva who dwells in this place, for the purpose of extinguishing the karmic obstacles of my sins. Also, a monk devoted to the practice of nembutsu samādhi…"
