(Continuing from the previous page, where the husband's spirit, now inhabiting the body of a cow, speaks to his wife and daughter:) "Become nuns, and through your practice you shall attain merit equally for yourselves and others. Be sure never to disobey my dying wish." Shedding tears of blood as he spoke these words, the mother and daughter were struck with shock and grief, unable even to raise their heads. Sorrow pressed upon their hearts, and they could not respond with a single word, prostrating themselves upon the ground. The cow raised its voice once more with great urgency: "Your lamenting only increases my suffering all the more, and cannot save me in the least. Though you have heard it said, 'When immeasurable suffering presses upon one's body, the wondrous power of Kannon's wisdom can save all worldly suffering,' and though you know the teaching that 'one utterance of the sacred name removes all sins,' I, throughout my life, did not believe it—I even mocked and refused to recite the name even once. Behold the fate to which my conduct has led me. Quickly, rouse your hearts of faith on my behalf, and pray to this Kannon for the repose of my soul. If this place becomes a sacred site of Kannon for all future generations, you shall know it as a sign that I have surely escaped the evil realms and attained rebirth in the Pure Land." With those final words, the cow gasped in agony and suddenly died. The mother and daughter, resolved never to betray these words, held back their tears and gave the cow a proper burial. They did not return to their lodgings; instead, they cut off their hair (and took religious vows), and both mother and daughter settled in this very place. There they prayed for Kannon's compassionate salvation, becoming single-minded and wholehearted practitioners of nenbutsu, and ultimately fulfilled their deepest wish of attaining rebirth in the Pure Land at this very site. It came to pass that at that time, this place flourished and became a land where the Buddhist Dharma was spread far and wide.
