[Right page] For some reason, there was a time when he neglected his practice (of sutra recitation) for a while. At a certain time, a sacred bird came flying and, turning toward the Venerable Master, cried out and said: "Venerable Master, why have you been neglecting your recitation? To the east of this place, there is a sacred site. It is called Chichibu District in Musashi Province. The Buddhist teachings shall flourish eternally in that land. Great Virtue, you must without fail, for the sake of protecting the Dharma in that land, recite the Wondrous Sutras as you did before, and furthermore make plans for the revival of the temple. I am a messenger of Kannon (Avalokiteśvara)." And with golden wings shining in all four directions, it flew off toward the east. [Left page] It flew away and was gone. It was well known, as recorded in his biography, that this Venerable Master had obtained the divine ear (clairaudience, tenni-tsū), and so he was able to understand the calls of the sacred bird well. He commanded his assembly and offered prayers, causing forty thousand volumes of the Wondrous Sutra to be recited for the flourishing of the Buddhist teachings in that land. After this, on the thirteenth day of the third month of the fourth year of Kankō (1007), as the Venerable Master approached his passing, he gave a final instruction to his disciple, the monk Genzū, saying: "After my death, go to Chichibu in the Eastern Provinces, make that place ever more of a sacred site of Kannon, and ensure that the traces of the karmic bonds that the Bodhisattva Gyōki established there shall never decline..."
