紅粉楼（みじまひべや）に照魔鏡（しやうまきやう）あり。忠巨蔵（ちうしんぐら）に阿房鏡（あほうのかゞみ）あり。鬢（ひげ）
抜鏡（ぬきかゞみ）の凹（くぼか）なる。懐中鏡（くわいちうかゞみ）の四角（しかく）なる。己恍惚鏡（うぬぼれかゝみ）に（まよ）迷ふのも。
水鏡（みづかゞみ）に悟（さと）るのも。人（ひと）の己（おの）かさま〴〵。或（あるい）は照（て）り或は（くも）曇り鬼（をに）
も仏（ほとけ）もうつせばうつる。胸（むね）の鏡（かゞみ）の善悪（ぜんあく）邪正（じやしやう）を竹（たけ）の筒（つゝ）から
振（ふ）り出（いだ）す。譬喩（ひゆ）方便（ほうべん）の霊液（みづかね）より。思（おも）ひついたるのべ鏡
出（だ）して写（うつ）して読本（よみほん）より。手（て）がるくわかる稗史（ゑざうし）と
なし。人心（ひとごゝろ）鏡（かゞみの）写絵（うつしゑ）と標題（ひやうだい）することしかり。

序文
紅粉楼（遊女屋）には照魔鏡（真実を映す鏡）がある。忠臣蔵には阿房鏡（愚かさを映す鏡）がある。鬢抜き鏡のくぼんだもの、懐中鏡の四角いもの。うぬぼれ鏡に迷うのも、水鏡で悟りを得るのも、人それぞれの在り方である。あるときは明るく照り、あるときは曇り、鬼も仏も映せば映る。胸の鏡に映る善悪や邪正を、竹筒から振り出すように表現する。たとえ話や方便という霊妙な手法から思いついて、延べ鏡を取り出して映し、読本よりも手軽に分かる絵草子として作り上げた。「人心鏡写絵」と題するのはそのためである。

Preface
In the red powder pavilion (pleasure quarters) there is a demon-revealing mirror (shōmakyō). In the Chūshingura there is a fool's mirror (ahō no kagami). There are concave eyebrow-plucking mirrors and square pocket mirrors. Some are deluded by mirrors of vanity, while others find enlightenment in water mirrors—such are the various ways of people. Sometimes clear and bright, sometimes clouded, whether demons or buddhas, all are reflected when placed before the mirror. The good and evil, right and wrong of the heart's mirror are shaken out like dice from a bamboo tube. Inspired by the spiritual essence of metaphor and skillful means, I have brought forth this extended mirror to reflect images, creating an illustrated storybook that is easier to understand than serious novels. Thus it is fitting to title this work "Mirror Reflections of Human Hearts" (Hitogokoro Kagami no Utsushire).
