**藻汐草序（もしおぐさのじょ）**
上意が下に伝わることは、国を治める上での根本である。物事の道理を弁え、民の情を通じることは、政を執り行う上での要諦である。今、この『蝦夷方言』の書を閲するに、これもまた民に臨む際の機要に関わるものであり、どうして単に翻訳者の慰みであるに過ぎないと言えようか。まして、徳化を垂れ、大業を開かんとする時においてはなおさらのことである。これが、この書を版木に上せた所以である。

**Preface to Moshiogusa**
That the will of those above reaches those below is the foundation of governing a nation. To discern the nature of things and communicate the sentiments of the people is the essential point of conducting governance. Now, upon reviewing this work, *Ezo Hōgen* (Ainu Dialects), one finds that it too pertains to matters of vital importance when dealing with the people [of Ezo]. How could it be regarded as merely a diversion for translators? All the more so at this time, when [we] are spreading the influence of [our] virtuous civilization and opening up great enterprises. This is the reason why this work has been committed to woodblock print.
