(Continued from the previous page) ...had been residing there. Item: In the twelfth month of the same year, the official duties (*go-yō*) at Aizu were completed, and [he] returned (*makarino-bori*) to Edo. Item: In the fourth month of the same eighth year of Bunsei [1823], the Year of the Ram (*Mi*), it was ordered that, once the formal handover of the lands in Sagami Province (*Sōshū*) and related matters had been completed, since there would remain official duties to attend to in that territory, [he and his party] should proceed together when Saigō Tanomo set out on his inspection tour (*junken*), and that they should immediately thereafter commence their duty rotation (*kinban*) in Sagami. This was so ordered. Item: In the fifth month of the same year, although official duties in the primary post (*honmu*) were numerous, [he] appropriately supervised the examination and inspection of the Edo garrison unit (*go-sonaegumi*), as well as initial proceedings concerning mounted warriors' (*kōshi*) foot-drill exercises, archery and gunnery practice (*yumi-jū sonaeuči*), and banner-carrying (*o-hatashi*) drills. In recognition of the satisfactory execution of these supervisory duties, it was ordered that one bolt of bleached cotton cloth (*sarashi ippan*) be bestowed in lieu of a formal summer garment (*o-katabira*). Item: In the sixth month of the same year, upon setting out to Sagami Province to serve in the duty rotation (*kinban*), [he] received from Lady Jūhōin: a *mon*-crested formal summer garment (*go-mon-tsuki o-katabira*), sake, side dishes, and wrapped gift items. Note: Although various gift items (*hairyō-mono*) were bestowed on each occasion of traveling up and down to Edo, these are not individually recorded here. Item: On the sixteenth day of the same month [the sixth month], [he] departed Edo, and arrived at Ura-no-gō in Sagami Province on the eighteenth. Together with Tanomo's party, [they] conducted an inspection (*junken*) of the defensive positions (*go-sonae-ba*) and the domain's territories (*go-ryōnai*). On the first day of the seventh month, [he] proceeded to Ura-no-gō, and on the thirteenth day of the eighth month, moved into the temporary long tenement house (*kari o-nagaya*) at the Kannonzaki garrison headquarters (*jin'ya*), where he commenced his duties in the duty rotation.
