(Continued from previous page) ...all matters having been brought to a satisfactory settlement. Even after several years had passed and the domain territories had reverted to their former administration, [the people] still expressed special fond remembrance of our house [the Aizu domain], which is a truly gratifying matter.
Beyond this, the general conduct of all affairs, including dealings with the Shogunate (*kōhen*) and negotiations with other domains, were entirely novel undertakings. Yet, as [the official] proceeded to take up residence at his post, he saw to such matters as identifying burial grounds for those stationed at both domain offices (*go-jinya*) and granting [them] according to individual wishes, as well as managing internal reconciliations — too numerous to enumerate one by one.
In particular, regarding the accounting and fiscal affairs (*go-kanjō-kata*): the expenditures on this occasion were immense. While there was no question of begrudging costs that pertained to military preparedness (*go-sonaé-kata*), there were many items of expenditure arising from dealings with the Shogunate and other domains, and outgoings tended to increase in any case. Therefore, apart from those expenditures which were upon careful consideration truly unavoidable, and taking into account the pre-existing state of the domain's internal finances (*go-naishō-buri*), [the official] directed [all concerned] to conduct thorough and rigorous scrutiny, pressing economy to an extreme degree, so that not even the slightest unnecessary expenditure remained, and that the domain's financial strength (*go-koku-ryoku*) might be preserved and extended. However, before he had completed even half of his term of residence at his posting, he was ordered to a new position (*tenshoku*) and recalled from Sagami Province (*Sōshū-omote*). Nevertheless, since he was kept on in his capacity regarding Sagami affairs while on permanent duty in Edo (*Edo jō-zume*), he continued to consult carefully and attend to the various outstanding matters pertaining to his former posting.
Item: In the eighth month of the same year, at Aizu, Tanaka Tetsujirō was appointed Military Affairs Magistrate (*go-gunji bugyō*). This was in part owing to the fact that he had previously submitted a proposal based on his own considered views (*naison*), [arguing that] if he were kept on permanent duty in Edo, he would be too far removed from military preparedness affairs at Aizu...
