[Note: The first paragraph is a continuation from the previous page.] However, upon arriving in Edo, his painful condition had improved, and moreover, given the customary precedents (o-furiaj), he fulfilled his duties as messenger up to and including the attendants (o-sobashū) of both enclosures (ryō-o-maru, i.e., both the Main Enclosure and the Western Enclosure of Edo Castle). One item: On the fifth day of the fifth month of the same year, the lord's entry into the domain (go-nyūbu) took place. He was immediately granted leave (o-itoma), presented with a formal half-coat (o-haori), and departed for Edo. One item: On the fifteenth day of the same month: As a formal notice (o-kiri-gami) had been sent the previous day from Lord Matsudaira Izumi-no-kami, he proceeded to the castle that day. He submitted the list of offerings (go-kenjō go-mokuroku) to the head of the surface Buddhist chaplains' group (omote-o-bōzu kumigashira), and in the White Audience Chamber (o-shiroshoin), the Kubō-sama (the Shogun) and Naifu-sama (the former Shogun/head of the Tokugawa main family) made their appearance, and he was granted an audience (o-mie). Through the announcement of the Sōja-ban (Master of Ceremonies), Lord Honda Bungo-no-kami, and with the intercession of Lord Izumi-no-kami, he was once again summoned and presented a ceremonial sword (o-tachi) and silver in lieu of a horse (gin uma-shiro), and offered his personal greetings. The Sōja-ban, Lord Matsudaira Shima-no-kami, made the formal announcement. He proceeded to the Western Enclosure (Nishi-no-maru), where he submitted the list of offerings to the Sōja-ban, Lord Tsuchiya Sagami-no-kami. As Lord Matsudaira Noto-no-kami was unable to attend due to official obligations (go-yō-sawari), Lord Sagami-no-kami received him in audience instead. Upon completion, he presented a ceremonial sword and silver in lieu of a horse and offered his personal greetings, whereupon Lord Sagami-no-kami granted him an audience. One item: On the twenty-second day of the same month: As a formal notice (o-kiri-gami) had been sent the previous day from the Acting Duty Councilor (go-yō-ban-dai), Lord Ōkubo Kaga-no-kami, he proceeded to the castle that day. In the Hinoki-no-ma (the Hall of Japanese Cypress), Lord Kaga-no-kami personally handed him a formal official letter (go-bōsho) and informed him that he was to be awarded a gift from the lord (hairiō-mono). The Sōja-ban, Lord Ōta Settsu-no-kami, presented him with two rolls of remaining silk fabric (nokori-aya), which he gratefully received. With the same gentleman's intercession, he offered his greetings, and then proceeded to the West[ern Enclosure...]
