至極穏便ニ致微行越中境ゟ沿海之地
理細々之儀まて綿密ニ致探索巡行致候於
途中当七日之夜会津ゟ之急飛脚ニ行逢
老衆ゟ連名ニ而当月朔日北地警固被蒙
仰正月中旬過彼地参着候様ニと之事ニ有之
拙者も彼地江被差越筈品々御用有之候間
同伴之者共江も申聞差急可罷帰旨内藤
源助方自筆ニ被認越承知之早速立戻
昼夜を不分兼行倍道いたし候処折節
雨雪降続キ路次以之外悪敷漸之義ヲ以
十日之夕方致参着被 仰出之旨承知之即刻
より当夏中之通会所入之間へ罷出御軍事

極めて穏便に微行を行い、越中境から沿海の地理の細かいことまで綿密に探索し巡行した。途中、当月七日の夜に会津からの急飛脚と行き合い、老中連名で当月朔日に北地警固を命じられ、正月中旬過ぎに彼地に参着するようにとのことであった。私もその地に派遣される予定で、種々の御用があるので、同伴の者たちにも申し聞かせ、急いで帰るべき旨を内藤源助方が自筆で認めて送ってきたので、承知して早速立ち戻り、昼夜を分けず兼行倍道で急いだところ、折節雨雪が降り続き、道中が非常に悪くやっとのことで十日の夕方に参着した。仰せ出された旨を承知し、即刻より当夏中の通り会所入りの間へ出て、軍事の御用大小となく悉く取り扱い勤めた。
一、同五辰年正月、蝦夷地へ出向くことについて御酒一樽、鮮鯛一折を頂戴仰せ付けられた。
ただし、右について出陣した隊下の者たち一同を自宅へ召び呼び、頂戴の御酒御肴を振舞い、銘々に盃を遣わし、すべての心得方について厚く申し含んだところ、格別に奮発し、頼もしい様子に見えた。
一、同月、御暇の御目見を仰せ付けられ、御盃を頂戴仰せ付けられた。

They conducted their secret mission extremely discreetly, thoroughly investigating and patrolling from the Etchu border along the coastal geography down to the finest details. On the way, on the night of the 7th of this month, they encountered an urgent messenger from Aizu. The message, signed jointly by the Council of Elders, stated that on the 1st of this month they had been ordered to guard the northern territories and should arrive at that location after mid-January. Since I was also scheduled to be dispatched to that location for various official duties, Naito Gensuke wrote in his own hand instructing the accompanying party to return urgently, which I acknowledged. We immediately turned back, traveling day and night at double speed, but as rain and snow continued to fall, the roads were extremely poor, and we barely managed to arrive on the evening of the 10th. Upon understanding the orders given, I immediately went to the meeting hall as I had during the summer and undertook all military duties, both large and small.
One item: In the first month of the same Kinoe-tatsu year (1844), regarding the dispatch to Ezo-chi, I was granted one barrel of sake and one box of fresh sea bream.
Note: For this occasion, I summoned all the subordinates who were to depart for battle to my home, served them the granted sake and delicacies, gave each a cup, and thoroughly instructed them on all aspects of proper conduct. They appeared particularly inspired and dependable.
One item: In the same month, I was granted an audience for leave-taking and was bestowed a ceremonial cup.
