[He] spoke to us with great kindness. Additionally, when Investigative Officer Tomiyama Genjuro stayed at this place, since we had previously requested his assistance with this official business, Hosuke's party made earnest appeals to him, and we also met with him directly to make urgent requests. Although he made thorough arrangements through his official channels, things somehow could not be properly organized.
1. During the stay at that location, Gensuke instructed that regulations for restraining each military unit's territorial conduct should be investigated. In addition to the regulations, [he ordered] detailed investigation so that their main intent would be clearly understood, and that arrangements be made for the assignment of crew members according to the size of each unit's transport vessels, so that they could be flexibly organized into four or five groups using primary and auxiliary unit arrangements as needed, managing everything meticulously without inconvenience, and ensuring that each unit was informed in advance.
1. On the 19th of the same month, during our stay in Aomori, Tsugaru Echizen-no-kami sent Sato Ichiemon as his messenger to our inn with kind words of inquiry about our welfare, and presented us with a box of dried confections.
Note: The aforementioned confections were distributed among the subordinate members of the unit.
Although this matter is extraordinary government business, the domain lords along our route have shown various courteous considerations. Particularly regarding the Tsugaru house, there have been especially attentive arrangements - the handling of lodging, relay of horses and men, and other matters have all been conducted with extraordinary consideration. Through formal letters from their senior retainers to our entire force on multiple occasions...
