Since it would be difficult to justify our actions, it is hard to withdraw while even one person remains. Moreover, since having all personnel cross the sea to Sōya and travel overland would cause various obstacles, we intend to withdraw by ship before autumn deepens. Additionally, since the extent of foreign enemy arrivals is difficult to predict, we communicated our desire to have seventy to eighty men remain stationed until sea crossing to Sōya becomes possible. While it is not feasible for all personnel to remain until autumn deepens, today the aforementioned was formally communicated. Uneme's side has had various concerns from the beginning and finds it regrettable to withdraw first, and although Lord Denjūrō is not the type to accept such orders, in any case, as a government representative there are matters of importance, but when news of Lord Itakura's death in battle at Shimabara was communicated to the various camps, the Nabeshima family's senior retainer Taku Mimasaku donned his helmet, cut his chin cords, and led his forces in an assault. Then, from the front lines came word that another senior retainer of the same family, Nabeshima Shichizaemon, had died in battle. Upon hearing this, the situation changed from the initial circumstances, and when the forces withdrew from that place, there was much debate. Ultimately, regarding the report to the government, it was necessary for senior retainers to die in battle, but since a colleague had already met his death, it was said this was no longer necessary. However, regarding obligations to the government, this was unavoidable due to matters of duty and propriety. Even if they were not among the highest-ranking retainers...
