Item: In the fifth month of the same year, having devoted many years of hardship to the production of military equipment (weapons and armaments) and having successfully achieved a lasting state of preparedness, he was awarded one *tan* (bolt) of *ro* (thin silk gauze) in lieu of a formal outer garment (*haori*), and one *tan* of bleached cotton cloth (*sarashi*) in lieu of a summer garment (*katabira*).
Item: On the seventh day of the sixth month of the same year, in the presence of the lord, he was appointed Head of the Permanent-Duty Senior Attendants (*Jōzume Goyōnin Headmaster*), with his seat ranking above that of the *bugyō* (magistrate/commissioner), as was officially proclaimed. In the anteroom (*o-tsugi*), he retained his previous entitlements: the *matoi* (standard), the horse banner (*umajirushi*), exemption from having to dismount from his palanquin (*norimono*) within Aizu, and his *dōshin* stipend, all as before.
He was also to concurrently serve as attendant for Lady Juhōin, and regarding his general conduct of duties, he was to follow the same practices as when he had previously served in this role. With particular attention to the upbringing of the young lord, he was to be especially attentive to matters of the young lord's care and growth, accompanying and attending him in the same manner as a senior attendant (*goyōnin*). Regarding the post of Military Affairs Magistrate (*Gunjī Bugyō*), he was to serve concurrently until a successor was appointed, and in connection with this, he was to continue overseeing the coastal battery (*odaiba*) matter as before, as was officially proclaimed.
Note: Regarding attendance from before the morning meal and remaining on duty throughout the entire day, the senior attendants were to take turns on alternate days, and overnight duty (*yadoban*) was not to be performed.
Item: On the same day, it was noted that, in addition to the already strained state of the domain's internal finances (*o-naishō-kata*), the continuing increase in expenditures in recent years had made the financial difficulties ever more severe. Consequently, with no other recourse, creditors in both this and other domains were informed that repayments would be made in annual installments, so that the domain's own financial management could naturally sustain itself. Using the monthly allocation of income distributions, funds were to be kept in readiness for urgent needs, and should there be even a slight excess of expenditures, there would inevitably be serious difficulties in balancing the accounts. The internal state of domain finances (*o-naishō*)…[continues on next page]
