但当夏御備場見分として罷越候節白川家
出役之者房総之方よりハ相模之村々小
物成諸運上産物類迄も細々相称候歟と
致推察候所若含有之万一房総之方御渡ニ
相成候而者第一台場数一ケ所不足ニ有之於
武門難相済義且御内立ニ取り房総之
方ハ海路を隔警急之節江戸ゟ御人数被
差向候ニ便利不宜若風波不穏候へ者手筈之
後ニ相成間敷義ニ無之土地柄も相州之方ゟハ余
程劣候様ニ相見相州之義東海道江隣り
浦賀三崎等之公領入交り人気之程者
少く申分有之間敷義ニ無之候へ共第一火
急ニ御人数被差向候手操宜土地も宜候へ者何
卒相模之方御引受ニ相成候様いたし度

立地の地所ならびに坪数等を河瀬重次郎と共に見分し、九月十三日に帰府いたした。
ただし、当夏に御備場（おそなえば）の見分として罷り越した折に、白川家の出役の者が、房総の方からは相模の村々の小物成・諸運上・産物の類まで細々と称揚（しょうよう）するのではないかと推察したところ、もし万一、房総の方に御渡しとなった場合は、第一に台場の数が一か所不足となり、武門として相済まぬ義であり、且つ、御内々の取り決めとして、房総の方は海路を隔てており、警急の節に江戸より御人数を差し向けるに便利が宜しくなく、もし風波が穏やかでない場合は、手筈が後れることにもなりかねない。土地柄も相州の方よりはかなり劣るように見受けられる。相州の義は東海道に隣り、浦賀・三崎等の公領と入り交じっており、人気（ひとけ）の点では少々申し分がないわけでもないが、第一、火急に御人数を差し向けられる手回しが良く、土地も宜しければ、何とか相模の方に御引き受けとなるよう致したい旨を、機密として申し達した上で、御家の義は白川家とは御領知高が懸け合わず、倍余りも違うことであれば、台場数の多い方を御渡し下さるべきことは申すまでもないが、万一、房総の方の要所にもないような場所などへ台（場を割り当てられる可能性があり）……

[The writer and] Kawase Jūjirō jointly inspected the land and its acreage for the proposed site, and returned to the capital on the 13th day of the 9th month.
Note: When we visited that summer to inspect the defensive positions (*sonaeба*), we surmised that the official sent by the Shirakawa domain might praise Kazusa/Shimōsa (Bōsō region) favorably, citing the villages of Sagami, their miscellaneous taxes, levies, and local products in detail. However, should the Bōsō region be assigned to us, first and foremost, the number of coastal battery emplacements (*daiba*) would fall short by one position—an outcome unacceptable for a military house. Furthermore, as a confidential matter, the Bōsō region is separated by a sea route, meaning it would be inconvenient to dispatch troops from Edo in the event of an urgent emergency. If winds and waves were rough, arrangements could easily fall behind schedule. The nature of the land also appears considerably inferior compared to Sagami. Sagami borders the Tōkaidō highway, and while it is interspersed with public domains (*kōryō*) such as Uraga and Misaki, leaving something to be desired in terms of the disposition of the local population, above all, it is well-suited for the rapid dispatch of troops in an emergency, and the land itself is favorable. It was therefore communicated confidentially that we wished, by all means, to be assigned Sagami. Furthermore, since our domain's assessed rice yield (*ryōchidaka*) differs from that of the Shirakawa domain by more than double, it goes without saying that the domain with the larger yield should be assigned more battery emplacements.
