感激し、ひそかに尼になろうとしたのを、貞子が漏れ聞いて、大いに驚いて固くこれを止め、妻妾が仲睦まじく、夫に仕えて貞操の名を表したということである。一条天皇の御事は、至尊の御身をもって、窮民の上までをも思いやりなさった御仁心を、論じ申し上げるのも憚りがあることであるけれども、貞子のような一婦人の心にも、このような潔い規範の心をもって、その妾を感動させたのは、義の宜しきを得たからである。

[The concubine] was moved to emotion and secretly tried to become a nun, but when Sadako overheard this, she was greatly alarmed and firmly prevented it. Wife and concubine lived harmoniously together, serving their husband and displaying the virtue of chastity. Regarding the matter of Emperor Ichijō, though it would be presumptuous to discuss the benevolent heart with which he, from his supreme position, showed compassion even for the poorest people, the fact that a single woman like Sadako could move her [husband's] concubine with such a pure and principled heart was because she had attained what was right and proper.
