...without any regard for the fact that this could become the starting point for corrupting the customs and manners of the realm, and an impediment to the nation and state. The fact that even among people of high rank there are often those who place their trust in it is truly a cause for lamentation. It is because there may be those who, upon seeing that Martin's theories have been cited here as evidence, might think that Western medical theories are also worth adopting, that the discussion has extended this far. However, as this falls outside the scope of the present volume, I shall not elaborate further. Having grasped with heart and eye—as discussed above—that this *ki* (vital energy/qi), from its constitution in the body, pervades this earthly realm, and with this single *ki* penetrates all the way to the very bottom of the universe beyond heaven and earth, to the uttermost depths of existence (*konrinzai*): after this understanding is achieved, one will come to a further realization in the later volumes—namely, concerning the wondrous workings of this *ki*'s spiritual responsiveness (*kan'nō*), as well as the principle of cultivating oneself and making one's intentions sincere so as to govern the realm and state; that in military arts, archery and horsemanship, and all manner of subsidiary skills, every action of human beings who dwell within this *ki* is, without exception, none other than the operation of this *ki*. After achieving this awakening (*hatsugo*), one may at last illuminate the Great Way of *Ikan* (ease and simplicity), and bring its virtue to fulfillment—but this, in the end, rests solely upon the person of true caliber.
