まり燈臺のもとへころひ来大納言あやしとおもひて
筆をさしをきこの作法を見るに三四歳の兒のか
みかふろなるか身手足は猿にて侍る鞠とゝもに
と　　なりて彼帰るの前にちかつきて大納言に
對ていはくあやしみ驚給事なかれ網申へき事
ありてこれまて参侍也むかしよりまりこのませ給
人おほく侍れ共かはかりの御事なし今日結願の
御鞠にさま〳〵の禄給　はれるよろこひ申侍　ん
ために会侍也以事次　述旨趣し由申ていはく
鞠をこのませ給う世々は国もさかえ官禄もすみ後世
の縁共なり侍也といふ其時彼卿問曰国さかえ官すゝ
む事はさもや侍らん菩提の縁とならんまてはあまりの
事にやと云う兒答曰誠さる御うたかひも侍らんなれ共
人の身には日の中に物をさま〳〵おもふ事幾千万
といふかすをしらす是別後世の妨となる事也而鞠
の場に立人は鞠のことならては思事なし人のため
あしかるへき事さらにおもはす　れは自然に罪業
うすくして出離の縁となる事御不審はるへからす

現代語訳

鞠が燈台の元へ転がってきた。大納言は怪しいと思って筆を差し置き、この様子を見ると、三、四歳の児の髪が禿げているのか、身体・手足は猿であった。鞠と共になって、彼の帰る前に近づいて、大納言に対して言うことには「怪しみ驚きなさることはありません。申し上げるべきことがあってここまで参りました。昔より鞠をこのまれる人は多くいらっしゃいましたが、これほどのご事績はありません。今日結願のお鞠にさまざまなお礼をお受けになられるお喜びを申し上げるために参りました。事の次第について趣旨を述べて申し上げます。鞠をこのまれる代々は国も栄え、官禄も進み、後世の縁ともなります」と言った。その時、彼の卿が問うて曰く「国が栄え官位が進むことはそうでしょうが、菩提の縁となるまでは余りのことではないか」と言った。児が答えて曰く「誠にそのようなお疑いもおありでしょうが、人の身には一日の中に物をさまざまに思うことが幾千万という数を知れません。これは皆後世の妨げとなることです。しかし鞠の場に立つ人は鞠のことでなければ思うことがありません。人のために悪しかるべきことは全く思いません。それゆえ自然に罪業が薄くなって出離の縁となることは、ご不審を晴らすべきではありません。」

英語訳

The ball rolled to the base of the lamp stand. The Major Counselor thought this strange and set down his brush to observe this phenomenon. What he saw was a three or four-year-old child with a bald head, but whose body, hands, and feet were those of a monkey. Together with the ball, before returning, it approached close to the Major Counselor and said: "Do not be surprised or alarmed. I have come here because there is something I must tell you. Since ancient times, there have been many people who have loved kemari, but none have achieved such accomplishments as yours. I have come to congratulate you on receiving various rewards for today's concluding kemari ceremony. I shall explain the circumstances and state my purpose: Those who love kemari through the generations will see their countries prosper, their official positions advance, and this becomes a connection for the afterlife."

At that time, the noble asked: "That countries prosper and official ranks advance may well be so, but isn't it going too far to say it becomes a connection to enlightenment?" The child answered: "Truly, you may have such doubts, but in a person's daily life, they think about various matters countless thousands and tens of thousands of times. All of this becomes an obstruction to the afterlife. However, those who stand in the kemari court think of nothing but kemari. They never think of anything that might be harmful to others. Therefore, naturally their sinful karma becomes lighter and it becomes a connection to liberation from suffering - this should dispel your doubts."
