をの〳〵の類を御覧せよとてひとり兒かめをもて
あく額に春楊花と云字あり又一人のちこの額
には夏安林と云字あり今一人の兒のひたいには秋
　と云字あり此字ともみな金字也成通卿こ
れを見るにいよ〳〵　肝　　にかさねて此兒い
はく我らは栁のこす　又し水のきよくすゝし
き所にすむものとも也おの〳〵の名ともをめせ　て
われも〳〵とまいりてつかはれたてまつる也今より
後庭鞠をはこのませ給へからす木はなれたる
宮つかへははかりなき大事也向後ふるき御まもりと
なるへしといひてかきけつ様にしてうせ侍ぬ其後
彼卿あさましくも又信仰ふかくも覚てよく〳〵
思案をめくらすに楊花とかけるはやくに也安林と
かけるはあり也蘭とかき侍はをと云声也三季を
つかさとれるすかたとも希代未當とも中々
こと葉をもよひかたき事なるへし於此の段は
日とき見ん人も更々不可及口外者也おそれも
はゝかりもおほく侍るれと後代の人の不審を散

現代語訳

「それぞれの類を御覧ください」と言って、一人の児が顔を上げると、額に「春楊花」という文字があった。また一人の稚児の額には「夏安林」という文字があり、今一人の児の額には「秋蘭」という文字があった。この文字はみな金字であった。成通卿がこれを見ると、いよいよ肝を冷やして、この児が言うには「我らは柳の木陰、また清く涼しい水の所に住む者どもです。それぞれの名前をお呼びになって、我も我もと参上してお仕え申し上げます。今より後、庭での鞠をこのまれてはなりません。木を離れた宮仕えは計り知れない大事です。今後は古いお守りとなるでしょう」と言って、かき消すように消えてしまった。その後、彼の卿は呆れるとともに信仰深くも感じて、よくよく思案をめぐらすと、「楊花」と書いたのは「やく」（厄）のことであり、「安林」と書いたのは「あり」（蟻）のことであり、「蘭」と書いたのは「を」という声のことである。三季を司るその姿どもは希代未曾有のことであり、なかなか言葉でも言い表しがたいことであろう。この段については、日頃見る人も決して口外してはならない。恐れもはばかりも多くあるけれど、後代の人の不審を散らすために記す。

英語訳

"Behold each of their types," and as one child raised his face, there were characters reading "Spring Willow Flowers" on his forehead. Another child had the characters "Summer Peaceful Grove" on his forehead, and yet another child had "Autumn Orchid" written on his forehead. All these characters were written in gold. When Lord Narimichi saw this, he became even more chilled to the bone, and the child said: "We are beings who dwell in the shade of willows and in places where the water is pure and cool. Call upon each of our names, and we will all come eagerly to serve you. From now on, you must not play kemari in the garden. Palace service separated from trees is a matter of immeasurable importance. Henceforth, we shall become your ancient protectors." Saying this, they vanished as if dissolving away. Afterward, that noble felt both amazed and deeply faithful, and upon careful consideration, he realized that "Yang Hua" (willow flowers) written meant "yaku" (misfortune), "An Lin" (peaceful grove) written meant "ari" (ants), and "Ran" (orchid) written meant the sound "wo." The forms governing these three seasons were unprecedented and rare, something that would be difficult to express even in words. Regarding this passage, even those who might see it regularly must absolutely not speak of it to others. Though there are many fears and reservations, I record this to dispel the doubts of future generations.
