一鞠勢分并縫様事
　口傳云春のはしめは聊おほきなりへし春
　ふかくなりてありなれんまゝにすこしちひさくなる
　へしといへり洛中に鞠くゝり二所あり河
　原院（樋口鞠くゝり也）又あまへなりかはらの院のまりはかたあな
　二ありあまりのまりはかたあな一ありいかにも河原院
　の細工故実あるゆへに鞠の上品出来侍也草
　二牧にて厚品ともをとりあはせてく又るなり一牧にて
　一くゝりたるか　つりにてわろし又燻鞠は花の
　比より葉からになるさて用之時節にあひ叶
　へり又ぬふ様ははりに目も五革も五見ゆる様に
　ぬふなりとり革おなし色のかはなるへし貴
　所は紫革にた　し所は藍革可相應也と
　りかはのなき鞠はいまはしきことなれは不用　
　忌中の鞠にとりかはのなき故也ぬふ様は以下事
　しるしつくすにおよはす

現代語訳

一、鞠の勢いの分け方並びに縫い方の事
　口伝によれば、春の初めは多少大きめに作るべきである。春が深くなって慣れ親しんだ状態になるにつれて、少し小さくなるべきであると言われている。洛中に鞠作りの職人が二か所いる。河原院（樋口鞠作りである）、またあまへなり。河原院の鞠は型穴が二つあり、あまりの鞠は型穴が一つある。いかにも河原院は細工の故実があるため、鞠の上品なものができるのである。草二牧にて厚品ともを取り合わせて作るのである。一牧にて一つを作ったものは釣り合いが悪い。また燻製の鞠は花の季節から葉が枯れる時期まで作り、用いる時節に適している。また縫い方は、針目も五つの革も五つ見えるように縫うのである。取り革は同じ色の革を用いるべきである。貴人は紫の革に、身分の低い者は藍の革が相応である。取り革のない鞠は忌まわしいことなので用いない。忌中の鞠に取り革がないためである。縫い方については以下のことを記すまでもない。

1. On the classification of ball momentum and sewing methods
　According to oral tradition, at the beginning of spring, the balls should be made somewhat large. As spring deepens and one becomes accustomed to them, they should become slightly smaller. There are two kemari ball makers in the capital: Kawarain (which is Higuchi's ball-making workshop) and Amahenari. Kawarain's balls have two mold holes, while Amari's balls have one mold hole. Since Kawarain has expertise in craftsmanship and precedent, they produce superior quality balls. They are made by combining thick materials from two pastures. Making one ball from one pasture results in poor balance. Smoked balls are made from the flower season until the leaves wither, making them suitable for the season of use. Regarding sewing methods, both the needle marks and all five leather pieces should be visible. The binding leather should be of the same color. Nobles should use purple leather, while those of lower status should appropriately use indigo leather. Balls without binding leather are inauspicious and should not be used, as balls for mourning periods lack binding leather. There is no need to fully describe the sewing methods below.
