うつくしきは別の事也わろき所をいかに〳〵なを
せとも腰から見むねそりあしたかく　ひゆかみひさ
からむ様のくせとも左右なくなをりかたし上様の所
作はととひあしにあたる事こまかならすとも
すかたかりうつくしくて二三あしすく〳〵と蹴いたし
侍らんは目出かるへし木のしたのかたきあしとをく
るゝまりのへとむる事なとはたやすくけれんは
いみしかるへけれと大　ひろけはたかりあしの
躰にてはなか〳〵なるへし但下臈足はあし
たかくさゝみにくきくせともありともあしたに
こまかにあたり侍らは上天をさしをき下ての数のまり
にもめしたてられるへき也上らう下　の差別
おもひにきて振舞へし　にいりきつゝす
へきにあらねと装束の五もんなとはあなかち作仏
なとの様に聊もみたれ侍らぬかよきにも侍らすのひ
あしかへり足なとさま〳〵のかたきあしの時そ五もん
もうちみたるゝをこと〳〵くしからすもてなして木下
ふかく立入てかきつくろひたるひゝしく見ゆ

現代語訳

美しいのは別のことである。悪い所をいかにも直そうとしても、腰の構えや胸の反り、足の高さ、膝の曲がり具合などの癖は、左右なく直しにくいものである。上位の人の所作は、時々足に当たることが細かくなくとも、姿形が美しくて二、三足すくすくと蹴なされば、目出度いものである。木の下での難しい足技や、遠くへ鞠を蹴ることなどは、たやすく蹴れば素晴らしいであろうが、大げさに広く蹴れば、かえって足の体勢が中途半端になってしまうであろう。ただし下位の者の足技は、足を高く上げ、見苦しい癖があっても、足技に細かく当たれば、上位の人を差し置いて、下手な数多の鞠にも召し立てられるであろう。上位下位の差別を心に留めて振る舞うべきである。

気を入れて尽くすべきではないが、装束の紋などは、わざとらしく作仏などのように少しも乱れないのが良いというわけでもない。飛び足、返り足など様々な難しい足技の時こそ、紋も乱れるのを、ことごとく美しく振る舞って、木陰深く立ち入って身だしなみを整える様子は大げさに見える。

英語訳

Beauty is a separate matter entirely. No matter how much one tries to correct bad habits, flaws such as hip positioning, chest posture, foot height, and knee bending are difficult to correct regardless of effort. Even if a person of high rank does not hit the ball with great precision every time, if their posture and form are beautiful and they kick cleanly for two or three touches, it would be admirable. Difficult footwork under trees or kicking the ball far away would be wonderful if done easily, but if performed in an exaggerated, expansive manner, the foot positioning would become awkward. However, if a person of lower rank, despite having the habit of raising their feet high in an unsightly manner, can execute precise footwork, they may be called upon to play even in games with many mediocre players, setting aside those of higher rank. One should behave with awareness of the distinctions between high and low status.

While one should not strain excessively, it is not necessarily good for one's costume and family crests to remain perfectly undisturbed like an artificial Buddha statue. It is precisely during various difficult footwork techniques like flying kicks and return kicks that the crests become disheveled, yet to conduct oneself beautifully throughout, then retreat deep into the shade of trees to adjust one's appearance, appears ostentatious.
