　口傳集には鷹をすへて鞭を打へしといへり
　いかなるゆへに侍らん和哥の道も風情有興と
　　　　ひより侍るれとこと葉くたけてすかたも
　優美ならねは全秀逸とをひたゝ躰を本によむ
　へきよし代々の庭訓也又しらぬ道の才子た
　ては返々よしなく侍れとも弓にも五善とたてゝ
　三にそまとにもまとにもあつなれ一二にはたゝた事はいを
　本に申てかはにあたるをもてゝもよしとせすと
　説語の要文にも侍也いつれの道にもわたりてさいの
　よきを肝要と申侍也円座をいたける様にとへ
　にもをしへ侍人もあれと當流には左右の手をはゆ
　ら〳〵ともちて袖のはたを大ゆひに聊かけて

　ぬと云う流あれはとて片目にて見んとすれはくひ

一進退作法事

現代語訳

口伝集には「鷹を据えて鞭を打つべし」と言っている。いかなる理由であろうか。和歌の道も風情ある興趣を重んじるけれども、言葉が下手で姿も優美でなければ、全く秀逸とは言えない。体を基本として詠むべきであるというのが代々の庭訓である。また知らない道の才子ぶるのは、返す返すも良くないことであるが、弓にも五善を立てて、三の的にも的にも慣れ親しみ、一二には正しい事柄を基本として申して、皮に当たることを持ってしても良しとしないと、説話の要文にもある。いずれの道においても、広く才能があることを肝要と申すのである。

円座を頂く様子について教えを問う人もあるが、当流においては左右の手をゆらゆらと持って、袖の端を大結びに少しかけて、結びを端に切り詰めず、また広げもせず、右の手を差し出さぬように持つべきである。また両眼で鞠を見ないという流派もあるからといって、片目で見ようとすれば首が曲がって見にくい。そのような事も自分では分からないことなので、先達に見せてよくよく相談すべきである。

The oral transmission collection states "one should perch a hawk and strike with a whip." For what reason might this be? While the way of waka poetry also values elegant sentiment and refinement, if one's words are clumsy and one's appearance lacks grace, it cannot be called truly excellent. The teaching passed down through generations is that one should compose poetry based on proper form and bearing. Moreover, while pretending to be a master of an unknown art is repeatedly inadvisable, in archery too, the five virtues are established, and one becomes familiar with both the third target and other targets. For the first and second, one should speak based on correct principles, and even hitting the leather backing should not be considered satisfactory - this is also found in the essential texts of instructional tales. In any art, having broad talent is considered essential.

Some people ask for instruction on how to receive the circular seat, but in our school, one should hold both hands gently swaying, lightly drape the sleeve edges in a loose knot, neither cutting the knot short at the edge nor spreading it wide, and hold it so as not to extend the right hand. Also, while there are schools that say not to look at the ball with both eyes, if one tries to see with one eye, the neck bends awkwardly making it difficult to see. Since such matters are things one cannot judge for oneself, one should show one's form to a senior practitioner and seek thorough consultation.
