漁網を下ろして引いたところ、網にかかって上がってきた者が五十余人。あまりに重くて引き上げることができず、ようやく半分ずつに分けて陸に上げたという。
●弟を助けたい
一老人がわずかに逃れたものの、気にかかって引き返すと、娘は水中より手を出して救いを呼んでいた。急いで手を取ると、娘が言うには「おじいさん、よく来てくれました。私は二人の弟を助けたい一心で、腕一本、脚一本を失いました。私はこれでお暇いたします。二人の弟が助かれば本望です」と。父はどちらも引き上げたが、二弟は気絶しており、水を吐かせて蘇生させた。しかし姉は翌朝になって亡くなってしまった。
●祟る
釜石にて一人の丁稚、十三歳ばかりの者が水を蹴って逃げ出すとき、後ろから女に縋り付かれた。振り離そうともがくと、女が水中より声をかけて「私を助けなければ祟るぞ」と言った。ともかく丁稚だけは逃げ出したが、その声が耳に残って忘れることができないという。
●死人が逆さまに地上に立つ
宮城県本吉郡唐桑は被害の非常に甚だしい所である。遭難の翌日、郡吏が救援に赴いたところ、逆さまになって田の中に刺さっている者があったという。
●教員の好模範
岩手県箱崎の教員朽内泰吉氏は津波と聞くや、取る物も取りあえず逃げ出たが、このままでは小学校の教室も今や心もとないと再び引き返して、御真影をようやく安全な位置に移した。そのために機会を失し、身に重傷を負って無惨にも忠死を遂げたという。
○御恤金下賜
天皇皇后両陛下には海嘯のため被害地の惨状が非常であることを憫然に思召され、岩手県へ壱万円、宮城県へ三千円、青森県へ千円を御救恤として下賜された。
○中央備荒貯蓄金
大蔵省では中央備荒貯蓄金中より今回岩手県へ五万円、宮城県へ壱万円を支出した。なお調査の上増加の予定。

Somehow the apprentice alone escaped, but that voice remained in his ears and he could not forget it.
●Dead Bodies Standing Upside Down in the Ground
Karakuwa in Motoyoshi District, Miyagi Prefecture was a place where the damage was extremely severe. The day after the disaster, when district officials went to provide relief, they found someone stuck upside down in a rice field.
●An Exemplary Teacher
Kuchiuchi Taikichi, a teacher in Hakozaki, Iwate Prefecture, heard about the tsunami and fled without taking anything, but thinking that the elementary school classroom was now in danger, he turned back again and managed to move the Emperor's portrait to a safe location. Because of this, he lost his opportunity to escape, suffered serious injuries, and tragically died a loyal death.
○Imperial Relief Funds Granted
Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress, deeply moved by the extraordinary devastation in the disaster areas caused by the tsunami, granted 10,000 yen to Iwate Prefecture, 3,000 yen to Miyagi Prefecture, and 1,000 yen to Aomori Prefecture as imperial relief funds.
○Central Famine Relief Savings
The Ministry of Finance disbursed 50,000 yen to Iwate Prefecture and 10,000 yen to Miyagi Prefecture from the Central Famine Relief Savings. Further increases are planned pending investigation.
