風来六々部集跋
千里を走る馬がいるといっても、これを見抜く伯楽がいなければ、街道の糞取り馬と一緒に扱われる。人を見る目がなければ、一緒にやってみようという話も生まれず、何でも一番安っぽく扱ってしまう。

細見嗚呼御江戸序
女衒が女を見るのに決まった方法がある。一に目、二に鼻筋、三に口、四には肌の美しさ。肌は凝った脂のようで、歯は瓠の実を割ったように白い。家々の好み、それぞれの顔立ち、尻の見方、親指の秘伝、刀豆や橘の秘術があって、これらを選ぶことはいい加減ではない。
しかし、牙のあるものには角がなく、柳が緑なのは花がないから。知恵があるものは醜く、美しいものには馬鹿がある。静かなものには張りがなく、賑やかなものはきやんとしている。顔と心と風俗の三拍子が揃うものは中座となり、立者となる。

Even if there exists a horse that can run a thousand ri, without a Bole (expert judge) to recognize its worth, it will be treated the same as a dung-carrying horse on the highway. Without the ability to recognize talent in people, no opportunity for collaboration arises, and everything is treated in the cheapest manner possible.

Preface to Saiken Aa O-Edo
Procurers have established methods for evaluating women: first the eyes, second the bridge of the nose, third the mouth, fourth the skin. The skin should be like congealed oil, and the teeth like split bottle gourds. There are secret techniques involving the preferences of different houses, various facial features, ways of examining the buttocks, the oral traditions of the thumb, and the secret arts of sword beans and bitter oranges - selecting based on these criteria is no casual matter.
However, those with fangs have no horns, and willows are green precisely because they bear no flowers. The wise are often ugly, while the beautiful are often foolish. The quiet lack vigor, while the lively can be forward. Those in whom face, heart, and deportment are harmoniously balanced become middle-ranked courtesans and leading ladies.
