現代語訳
川通りの鎌原村を始めとして、川北・大前より川沿いの村々を押し流した。第一波の水の先頭には、黒鬼のように見えるものが大地を揺るがし、家の垣根や森、その他何百年もの年月を経た老木をことごとく押しつぶし、砂と津波と土を噴き上げ、煙を立て、震動し、雷電が走った。第二波の泥と大石は百丈余りの高さまで打ち上げられた。
青龍が紅の舌を出し、両眼は日と月のように輝くかのようで、しばらくの間は闇夜となり、大石の光と百万の雷鳴のような響きで天地が崩れるかと思われた。火炎の炎は空を突き抜けるほどで、田畑や耕作地はすべて残らず、ただ一面泥の海のようになった。どこがどの畑の境界であるかも分からなくなり、老若男女が流され死に、またまさに死のうとしている者もあった。

Beginning with Kambara Village along the river, the flow swept around the villages along the riverbanks from Kawakita and Ōmae onward. At the head of the first great surge of water appeared something resembling a black demon, which shook the very earth, crushing fences around houses, forests, and ancient trees hundreds of years old — all were flattened. Sand, waves, and earth were hurled upward, smoke rose, and the ground trembled with lightning and thunder. The second surge of mud and great boulders was flung up to a height of over a hundred *jō*.
It was as if a blue dragon extended its crimson tongue, its two eyes shining like the sun and moon. For a time, it became as dark as a moonless night, and with the light of the great boulders and a roar like a million thunderclaps, it seemed as though heaven and earth would collapse. The flames of fire pierced the very sky, and all the fields and farmlands, without exception, became nothing but a vast sea of mud. No one could tell where the boundaries of any field lay. Men and women, young and old, were swept away and killed, and still others were on the verge of death.
