思ひかけなき命を大海のみくづとし
浅間のきじん地獄（チゴク）へいきながらの人
をすゝめ一時のさいなん露（ツユ）まぼろし
いなつまのきゆるがごとし誠に大変目
をさまし前代未聞夢（ゼンダイミモンユメ）のことしおめ
一村々田畑泥五尺七尺壱丈余おしうめ其
中に火石ありて焼る事三十日余也
一あわれなるかな吾妻川附むら〳〵流
死人こんはくのこりまよひて川 筋（スジ）沢 辺（ベ）
にてなく声（コヘ）ありまい夜〳〵のことなれば
しょ〳〵 寺（テラ）〳〵におゐて飯食浄水（ホンジキジヤウスイ）をそゝ

一浅間山の麓（フモト）にむかしは鬼神（キジン）堂あり慶（ケイ）長
現代語訳
思いがけず命を大海の藻屑とし、浅間の鬼神が地獄へ生きながらの人をいざない、一時の災難は露のごとく、幻のごとく、稲妻が消えるように（はかない）。誠に大変、目を覚ますような、前代未聞の、夢のような出来事である。
一、村々の田畑は泥が五尺・七尺・一丈余も押し埋め、その中に火石があって燃え続けること三十日余りであった。
一、あわれなるかな、吾妻川沿いの村々の流死人の魂魄が残りさまよって、川筋・沢辺にて泣く声があり、毎夜のことであったので、各所の寺々において飯食・浄水を注ぎ、餓鬼道を供養し、木塔追善の後、泣く声は聞こえなくなった。

英語訳
Unexpectedly, lives were reduced to floating wreckage in the great ocean; the demon-god of Asama lured the living toward hell, and the momentary disaster vanished like morning dew, like an illusion, like a flash of lightning fading away. Truly, this great calamity was something to awaken one's eyes — an unprecedented event, as if from a dream.
Item: The fields and farmlands of the villages were buried under mud of five shaku, seven shaku, or over one jō in depth, and within that mud there were fire-stones (volcanic rocks) that continued to burn for more than thirty days.
Item: How pitiful — the souls of those who drowned in the villages along the Agatsuma River lingered and wandered, and weeping voices could be heard along the riverbanks and valley streams every night. And so, at various temples throughout the area, offerings of food and pure water were poured out, memorial services were held for those suffering in the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, and wooden memorial towers were erected for the repose of their souls. After these rites, the weeping voices were heard no more.
