元申年に焼失（セウシツ）しといふその頃奥州よね沢
の人と甲州ふちうの茂左衛門といふ者此山に
のごり大 風（アメ）雨しきりに吹来り是非（ゼヒ）なく
この堂に一夜あかせり四月九日のことなりしか
その夜四ッ時女のかたち見へかの堂へ入らん
とするを黒赤（コクシヤク）の鬼（ヲ二）おておもてへ引出し
松の木へしめくゝし釘（クギ）ぬきにて舌（シタ）をはさみ
ひつ〳〵となく声あらおそろしやまた薪（タキゝ）
をよせて火をつけその形（カタチ）すみのことくに
してまた右のかたちにせし何国（イヅク）より来り
しか是も女見へて麓より峯へ鉄（テツ）の
ぼうにてせめのごり間もなく夜 明（アケ）たり
おもては何のけしきもなかりしが浮世（ウキヨ）の罪（ザイ）
人此山にのぼるといふ事うたかひなし
現代語訳
慶長元年（申年）に焼失したといわれる、その鬼神堂のことであるが、その頃、奥州米沢の人と甲州府中の茂左衛門という者がこの山に残り、大雨風がしきりに吹き来たって、やむを得ずこの堂で一夜を明かした。四月九日のことであった。
その夜、四つ時（午後十時頃）に女の姿が現れ、かの堂へ入ろうとするところを、黒赤い鬼が手をとって表へ引き出し、松の木へしめ縄でくくりつけ、釘抜きで舌を挟み、ひいひいと泣く声は、何とおそろしいことか。さらに薪を寄せて火をつけ、その形が炭のようになったかと思えば、またもとの姿に戻る。これを何度も繰り返した。どこから来たのか、また別の女の姿が現れ、麓から峰へと鉄の棒で責め苛まれながら、間もなく夜が明けた。
表には何の様子もなかったが、浮世の罪人がこの山に登るということは間違いないことである。
英語訳
It is said that the Demon Deity Hall (Kijin-dō) at the foot of Mt. Asama had burned down in the first year of Keichō (the Year of the Monkey). Around that time, a man from Yonezawa in Ōshū Province and a man named Mozaemon from Fuchū in Kōshū Province remained on this mountain. As heavy rain and wind blew in relentlessly, they had no choice but to spend the night in this hall. It was the ninth day of the fourth month.
That night, at the Hour of the Pig (around 10 p.m.), the figure of a woman appeared and attempted to enter the hall, whereupon a black-and-red demon seized her hands and dragged her outside, tied her to a pine tree with rope, clamped her tongue with a nail puller, and her crying voice—"hii, hii"—was truly terrifying. Then, brushwood was piled up and set alight, and as her form turned black as charcoal, it returned once more to its original shape. This was repeated over and over. Another figure appeared—again a woman, from no known place—and was tormented from the foot of the mountain to the peak with an iron rod, until before long dawn broke.
Outside, there was no sign of anything having occurred, but there can be no doubt that sinners of this transient world climb this mountain [to face their punishment].
