(Continued from previous page) ...residing in Kanahara Village, climbing this mountain repeatedly. Later [the temple] became Enmei-ji, a branch temple of Tōei-zan Kan'ei-ji. This monk, Gikai, was the founding priest of Enmei-ji and the bettō (administrator) of Asama Myōjin.
Item: At this time, [the volcano] began erupting on the 9th day of the 4th month of Tenmei 3, the year of Mizunoto-U (1783). From that point on, ash and sand fell continuously day after day without ceasing. On the 3rd and 4th days of the 7th month, the eruption was particularly violent. From Karuizawa, Usui, Sakamoto, Matsuida, Annaka, and Takasaki to the Kodama and Hanzawa Districts of Musashi Province — an area spanning more than thirty ri — ash and sand accumulated to depths of two to three shaku. At Sasaga Pass on the Usui road, it piled up to five shaku and six sun, rendering the road impassable for both people and horses. Lords great and small, traveling in both directions, were forced to detour through Kōshū (Kai Province). In Karuizawa, over thirty houses were burned down by falling volcanic rocks, and fourteen shrine households (shake) at Usui were crushed under the weight of the stone and sand. The crops, plants, and trees in the aforementioned villages and mountains all appeared as if it were the middle of winter.
