Kusatsu hot spring is located at an altitude of approximately 4,000 to 5,000 feet, surrounded by mountains on all sides, with the bathing springs situated in valleys, making it an excellent location for summer retreat. All the waters have a sulfurous odor. These bathing springs became famous because Minamoto no Yoritomo once bathed here in ancient times.
Shima Village: Contains salt, giving it a salty taste.
The main components of this spring are salt and sodium sulfate, which have blood circulation promoting, metabolism improving, mild laxative, and acid-neutralizing effects, making it effective for the following ailments:
Weak stomach, indigestion, anemia, liver disease, chronic constipation
For the above diseases, internal use is effective. However, the dosage should be one to three cups per session.
For chronic skin diseases, stubborn rheumatism, paralysis and numbness of limbs and joints caused by dislocations and contusions, and neuralgia, both internal and external use are effective. Dosage is the same as above.
External bathing is also effective for the above diseases.
Kazawa: Located in Tashiro Village, spring quality unknown. Good for headaches, abdominal masses, apoplexy, and fluid retention; also revives withered plants and trees.
Kawahara: Located in Kawarayu Village, spring quality contains calcium sulfate, alum earth, bitter earth, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen sulfide gas; good for scabies and rheumatic pain.
Kawanaka: Located in Matsutani Village, contains calcium sulfate, alum earth, bitter earth, hydrochloric zinc and potassium; good for various ulcers and scabies.
Hato-yu: Located in Honjuku Village, spring quality contains sulfur and alum; good for external wounds.
Yugashima: Located in Sarugakyo Village, spring quality contains calcium sulfate, alum earth, and hydrochloric magnesium; mainly good for colic, scabies, rheumatism, syphilis, leprosy, etc.
Hoshi-toge: Located in Nagai Village, good for hot flashes.
Kubo: Located in Yujuku Village, good for apoplexy, etc. ○Yakushi is good for eye diseases. ○Kotaki is good for warts.
(1) Temperature 145 degrees, spring quality contains sulfur and gas, tasteless and odorless but with white sediment. Spring water emerges from old volcanic rock, flow rate about 2 to 5 sho per minute.
(2) Same at 131 degrees with flow rate of about 1 to 2 sho, others same as above.
(3) Same at 115 degrees, only difference is no gas content, all others same as above.
Kami-sawatari: Located in Kami-sawatari Village, spring quality is calcium sulfate, hydrochloric magnesium, alum earth; good for syphilis, ulcers, scabies.
Manza: Located below Manza Mountain, contains sulfur and copperas; good for fluid retention and colic.
Hanashiki: Located in Iriyama Village, contains calcium sulfate, alum earth, hydrochloric iron; good for scabies, swellings, etc.
Kozaka-yu: Located in Fukiji Village, spring quality unknown; good for tapeworms, burns, cuts.
Fuse-yu: Located in Fuse Village, spring quality and therapeutic effects unknown.
Tone County Iri-no-yu: Located at Sakamoto post station, has sulfurous properties.
