英語訳

[Continued from previous page] **Same (Local) Tamukae** Spring quality unknown. Recommended for scabies. **Same (Local) Soyama** Spring quality contains saline elements. Recommended for hernia/colic. --- **Echigo Province — Iwafune District — (Local) Yuzawa** Six *ri* to the southeast of Yuzawa Village. Spring quality contains saline elements. Spring quality contains both sulfurous and saline elements. Recommended for accumulation/colic, beriberi, consumptive fatigue, and stroke. ○ On the night of August 6th, Meiji 11 [1878], heavy rain fell, and by the 7th, the Ara River, the Tainai River, and others flooded. As a result, several dozen houses at this hot spring resort were swept away, and it is said that four or five bathers drowned. **Kambara District — (Local/Miscellaneous) De-yu [also known as] Kannon-yu** Located in De-yu Village. Temperature: 95 degrees. Spring quality is exceptionally clear, containing both sulfurous and aluminous (*ban*) elements. Recommended for syphilis, scabies, swellings, sword cuts, and fractures/sprains. The spring water flows in large quantities from an alum (*aluminium*) stratum. **Same (Local) Takidani** Four *ri* and eighteen *chō* from Takidani Village. Spring quality contains sulfur and iron. Being a cold spring, it is heated before bathing. Spring quality contains saline elements. Recommended for accumulation/colic, consumptive fatigue, and numbness/paralysis. It is said that there are regularly more than two hundred bathers. Furthermore, five or six *chō* to the north of the bathhouse, at a place called Wataridō, on the western bank of a small stream, there are fish-patterned stones. These fish impressions are contained within hard, dark grey, semi-slate stone. The local people call them fossils of sardines (*iwashi*), claiming that in ancient times, the Great Master Kōbō [Kūkai] discarded the bones of sardines served as table scraps at this location, and these sardines gradually multiplied [into stone]. This explanation is of course not credible, yet the place has thereby become one of the Great Master's historic sites, and believers come from afar to seek them out; thus the local people regularly collect and sell them. I myself obtained two or three clear specimens. These fossils appear to belong to the Tertiary period and seem to be among the most recent in age. For further detail, one should consult a paleontologist. **Same (Local) Imaita** Located in Imaita Village. Spring quality and therapeutic effects the same as above. **Same (Local/Miscellaneous) Kusafuzu** Cold spring. Located in a sub-village of Tage Village.
