*(Continued from previous page)* Refer to page 26. ○ (Reference work "Ge") According to its chemical composition, this spring is merely extremely hot, and possesses no particular therapeutic efficacy. **Takaki District — (Reference works "Shi" / "Ge") Obama** Located in Obama Village. The spring quality and therapeutic effects are similar to those of the Atami hot spring in Izu Province. Refer to page 7. It is likely an intensely hot saline spring. ○ (Reference work "Ge") As this hot spring is situated on the coast of Shimabara Bay, it is occasionally inundated by seawater during unusually high tides. Since the spring source is at a considerable distance, three stone-built bathing tubs (*yubune*) have been constructed to channel the spring water to them. These tubs are covered by nothing more than small thatched roofs. Two or three guest lodgings stand beside them, and compared to Unzen-dake, the accommodations offer considerably more freedom and comfort. Although the temperature at the spring source is extremely high, at the bathing tubs it ranges from 100°F to approximately 109°F. **Same (Local / Reference work "Ge") Unzen-dake** Located in the same village. The spring quality contains sulfurous vapors and is recommended for syphilis, sword wounds, and related conditions. ○ (Reference work "Ge") This area is the remains of an old volcano, and contains two boiling springs known as Ōjigoku ("Great Hell") and Kojigoku ("Small Hell"). Eighty-seven years ago from the present, this mountain underwent a great eruption, ejecting a vast quantity of volcanic rock. Even now, fragments of this rock can be seen scattered at various locations. Ōjigoku is situated on the northern slope of the old volcano, at an elevation of approximately 1,800 *shaku* above sea level, and measures approximately 20 *shaku* in breadth. The boiling of its water is exceedingly vigorous. The spring water is clear, with the odor of sulfur and an unpleasant ferruginous taste. The temperature is 212°F — the boiling point — and the spring quality and therapeutic effects are similar to those of the Kusatsu hot spring in Kōzuke Province. Refer to page 28. Local folk regard this spring as a source of sulfur, but the actual amount present is so small that it cannot be distinguished without chemical analysis. Kojigoku is situated on the southern slope of the mountain, at an elevation of approximately 1,700 *shaku* above sea level, and its breadth is considerably smaller than that of Ōjigoku. The spring water is clear, with only a faint odor of sulfur, and possesses an astringent taste that testifies to the presence of iron. It is therefore considered to contain a very large quantity of iron. The spring quality and therapeutic effects are similar to those of the Santogoya hot spring in Shimotsuke Province. Refer to page 35. Both of these hot springs are highly effective in treating chlorosis (iron-deficiency anemia) and skin diseases. **Same (Reference work "Ge") Takagi** A simple spring (non-mineralized). --- **Higo Province — Tamana District — (Local / Reference work "Ichi") Tominoo** Located in Tominoo Village. The spring quality contains sulfuric acid and is recommended for minor sores. **Same (Local / Reference work "Ichi") Ryūganji** Located in Ryūganji Village. Spring quality and therapeutic effects same as above. **Same (Local / Reference work "Ichi") Koama** Located in Koama Village. The spring quality contains sulfur and is recommended for minor sores. **Akita District — (Local / Reference work "Ichi") Funatsu** Located in Funatsu Village. Spring quality same as above. Recommended for beriberi, abdominal accumulation/hernia (*senshaku*), scabies, and minor sores. **Same (Reference work "Ichi") Handayu** Located in Handa Village. Spring quality unknown/unrecorded. **Yamaga District — (Reference work "Ge") Yamaga** Located in Yumachi. Contains a small quantity of sulfurous vapor; spring quality and therapeutic effects are similar to those of the Oyu hot spring in Izu Province. Refer to page 9. **Same (Reference works "Ge" / Local) Hirayama** A cold spring. Located in Hirayama Village. Contains a small quantity of saline. Spring quality and therapeutic effects are similar to those of the non-saline (*muen*) spring of Atami in Izu Province. Refer to page 8. ○ (Local) The spring quality contains sulfurous vapor. Recommended for hernia/abdominal pain (*senkì*), minor sores, burns, and sword wounds. **Same (Local) Kumairi** Located in Kumairi Village. The spring quality contains sulfurous vapor and is recommended for eye diseases, minor sores, and sword wounds... *(continues on the next page)*
