*(Continued from the previous page.)* ...one should select a free-alkali spring or a calcareous spring; when the patient is of a scrofulous constitution, one should select an alkaline spring containing a large quantity of common salt; when the patient is of a stubborn skin disease constitution, one should select a calcareous spring containing hydrogen sulfide; and when one observes that the patient suffers from constitutional anemia (innate poverty of blood), it is appropriate to select an alkaline spring containing iron. This may be taken as one example of hot spring prescription, and similar reasoning may be applied to other patients according to the same method. However, in an age when pathology is not yet fully elucidated and the physiological effects of chemical compounds are not yet thoroughly understood, one must not fall into the error of relying solely upon this method while neglecting all else. Beyond examining the composition of the water, one must always consider the elevation, temperature, and climate of the mineral spring locality. For indeed, while some patients require high ground of two thousand to four thousand feet above sea level, others may find mountain climates unsuitable. Furthermore, there are patients who benefit from regions that are considerably drier than other places but whose conditions worsen in humid areas; some are better suited to warm climates, while others respond well to cold climates. The most appropriate season for undertaking mineral spring treatment is termed the "spring season" (*senki*), and it has been customary to begin on the first day of the sixth month and conclude on the first day of the tenth month. However, this is an outdated fallacy of former times and has now been entirely abandoned. Indeed, in using mineral springs to cure illness and restore the body... *(Text continues on the next page.)*
