*(Continued from the previous page.)* ...when discussing the objective of preserving and maintaining the health of the body, every time of year is equally favorable, and there is by no means any fixed seasonal restriction. Toward this purpose, it is also permissible to use mineral water drawn from the spring source and transported in bottles. However, since there are many cases in which strict care is not taken when filling the bottles with mineral water, I shall here set forth one or two points on this matter.
When the water contains a large quantity of gas, one must always seal the mouth of the bottle tightly. There are only two or three varieties of mineral spring that are suitable for transport in wooden tubs. In the case of mineral water stored in wooden tubs, much of the gas escapes, and a considerable amount of the water also undergoes decomposition through contact between its chemical constituents and the wood of the tub. Even supposing that the mineral spring in question contains no gas and that its chemical constituents do not decompose upon contact with wood, there will frequently be cases in which the flavor and smell of the wood are imparted to the water — and thus one cannot claim to have entirely avoided the deleterious effects.
Upon arriving at a hot spring resort, if the visitor is in good health and has come solely for rest and the relief of tedium, it is best to begin by acclimatizing to the local society as quickly as possible and joining in its pleasures and recreations. Nevertheless, in all things it is essential to avoid excess, and one must not forget to follow the principle of the "doctrine of the mean" — that is, the rule of moderation.
The most favorable times for drinking mineral water are before the morning meal and before afternoon tea...
