The appropriate temperature of mineral water for internal consumption is defined as ranging from fifty to eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit (approximately ten to thirty-one degrees Celsius). Should the water be exceedingly cold, it will not be readily absorbed by the body and may moreover cause considerable damage to the stomach and intestines. When elderly persons, young children, or pregnant women intend to make use of mineral water, extremely careful attention must be exercised. In former times, mineral springs were entirely avoided by pregnant women on the grounds that they were harmful; however, in recent years this view has been overturned, and it has been discovered that, depending on certain circumstances, the use of mineral springs may in fact prove beneficial to both the pregnant woman and the unborn child.
During the course of mineral spring treatment, overeating must be strictly prohibited. Although an increase in appetite is doubtless a favorable sign arising from the efficacy of the mineral spring, if one does not know how to restrain this appetite and exceeds the appropriate amount of food and drink, it will inevitably impede the complete cure of the original illness. Therefore, due attention must be paid to this matter, and one's diet should consist of light, plain, and nourishing foods, so as to complement and sustain the full effectiveness of the mineral water.
The length of time required for mineral spring treatment is difficult to fix uniformly; however, approximately three weeks — twenty-one days — is taken as the general standard. Depending on the condition and circumstances of the illness, however, this period may be extended to three or even four times that duration. Furthermore, in the case of patients with longstanding illness who seek to transform their constitution and effect a fundamental cure of their stubborn ailment...
