**Settsu Province** — Arima District (Lower District / Road District) — Arima (Arima) Located in Yuyama-chō, fourteen *ri* from the Western Capital (Kyoto), nine *ri* from Osaka, and six *ri* from Kobe; the elevation of the site is approximately 1,050 *shaku* above sea level. The bathhouse is situated in the center of the town. Though two facilities have been established, the bath water flows between them and they are separated only by a single partition board. The temperature ranges from 104 to 106 degrees (Fahrenheit). In the vicinity, there are approximately thirty two- and three-story inns. ○ Although the town has a mere five hundred or so households, it is greatly adorned with beauty on account of its inns, bamboo craft shops, brush shops, and the like. The bamboo crafts and brushes made from wool and similar materials are just as famous as the hot springs themselves. There is also the institution of the *yuna* (bath attendants), of which there are two types. Girls between the ages of twelve or thirteen and fifteen or sixteen who have shaved their eyebrows and blackened their teeth are called *koyuna* (junior bath attendants), while those aged twenty and above are called *kashie-yuna* (senior bath attendants). As for bathing, attendants are provided to escort guests only three times a day — at eight in the morning, at noon, and at four in the afternoon. Those who wish to visit the bathhouse at other times are by custom expected to go on their own. The spring water contains numerous salts and iron, and may be described as extremely clear, colorless, and odorless. When tasted, one first perceives a salty flavor, but afterward an astringency (*shibumi*) develops due to the iron content. The principal components of this mineral spring are calcium chloride, potassium chloride, ferrous bicarbonate, magnesium chloride, and the like; it possesses antiseptic, anticoagulant, tonic, laxative, and antacid properties. The remaining components are present in quantities too small to be of therapeutic use. The medical and therapeutic benefits are as follows: Malignant ulcers / Hardened swellings of the glands and other stubborn tumors / Edema (*suiki*) / Chronic and stubborn skin diseases / Bruises / Stroke (paralysis) Chronic rheumatism / Joint pain / Nervous headache / Lower back pain / Conditions in which blood vessels become lax and their functions deteriorate / Chronic nervous diseases, uterine diseases, and hypochondria (*ipokondern*) arising from nervous laxity or excessive stimulation / Various diseases arising from muscular movement disorders caused by loss of normal nervous function, including tremors (*furui*), muscle cramps (*suji no tsuri*), and numbness (*shibire*) — caution should be exercised when bathing / Mental illness (*kibyo*) / Depression and melancholy (*fusagi*) / Epilepsy / Indigestion and loss of appetite / Anemia, i.e., conditions in which the entire body is pallid and accompanied by fatigue and debility, as well as amenorrhea, menstrual pain, and chorea (St. Vitus' dance) / For those with constipation: suitable as an enema / For children with thrush (*gakōsō*) and throat ulceration: suitable as a gargle / Those with acidic dyspepsia (*inke*, i.e., digestive debility), chronic bronchitis, and bladder disease in which the urine is acidic are most suited to internal consumption. However, for internal use, the reddish turbid sediment should be filtered out and only the clear portion consumed. Those for whom bathing in this mineral spring is harmful are as follows: Internal inflammation / Persons of plethoric constitution; congestion of the heart and lungs; those with structural defects of the lungs, heart, or major blood vessels / Those with chronic obstruction of the stomach or liver, or with hard swellings and hypersensitivity to touch / Those who are constitutionally weak are not suited to drinking the water. --- Same district (Road District) — Shinyu (New Spring) Called *Hana-no-yu* ("Flower Spring"). Temperature: 69 degrees. Located in Yuyama-chō, on ground somewhat higher than the main spring, at a distance of approximately 150 paces. This spring has not yet been made available for bathing use. The water tastes salty with an astringent quality, and bears a faint odor of hydrogen sulfide gas. ○ The ways in which this mineral spring differs from the Arima mineral spring are: first, its lower temperature; second, its lower specific gravity and smaller content of salts; third, its large quantity of free carbonic acid and bicarbonate salts; fourth, its small content of hydrogen sulfide. Nevertheless, during summer both springs become alike in their character [the text continues on the next page].
