There is also an oral tradition on this matter. One: Kanenaga (annotated split text: middle) — Reign of Emperor Godaigo — Around the Genkō era (1321–1324) The tachi's shape is long, with a high curvature at the base (koshimoto), a wide shinogi (ridge line), and an iori-mune (peaked back ridge) of old style. The base of the blade (habaki-moto) spreads out gently and fully, and the kissaki (tip) is somewhat compact. The forging pattern (kitae) is masame-hada (straight grain), and is exceedingly fine. The ji (blade surface) is dark in color. The hamon (temper line) at the base of the blade is forged extremely narrow, with a slight tendency to droop (tare). However, at around one shaku (approximately 30 cm) above the base, a wide, drooping, irregular hamon (hire no midareba) is applied. The nie (crystalline martensite) is abundant and coarse, but there are also fine nie present. The character of the sparkling (ira-ira) nie resembles gold dust sprinkled over a lacquer surface of the finest quality — it is an exceptionally brilliant nie. There are also areas of beautiful, hazy hamon, and the return of the hamon (kaeri) is also slightly tempered... (continues on next page).
