(Continued from previous page) The kissaki (tip) is well-covered with nie. The blade color is bluish-white, the steel is hard, and the kasane (thickness of the blade) is also substantial. There are two generations bearing the same signature; the first generation uses a large signature (dai-mei). The ji (surface) color is also somewhat whitish and is inferior (compared to the first generation). The character of the bōshi (temper pattern at the tip) return (kaeri) slightly resembles that of Yasuyoshi of Kyushu. The large signature (first generation) has coarse yasurime (file marks) on the nakago below the habaki, while the later small signature (second generation) has fine yasurime. The yasurime on the nakago of the katana does not differ greatly between the upper and lower portions. The tare-yaki (drooping temper) of the small signature also resembles Bitchū-mono (works from Bitchū Province). The first generation Kanenaga is included among the chūshin-mono (recommended masterpieces). There is also an oral tradition on this matter. One: Sadayoshi (annotated split text: lower/upper ranking), Sadakiyo, Sadamune, Hōshō Gorō Reign of Emperor Godaigo — Around the Gen'ō era (1319–1321) The tachi's shape is long, with a wide shinogi (ridge line) and a deep iori-mune (peaked back ridge). The forging pattern (kitae) is masame-hada (straight grain), and the ji color is dark with a slight whitish quality. The hamon (temper line) is also dark and bluish. Both tachi and katana have a yaki-tsume (temper that runs into and closes at the tip without a distinct return). However, the tachi does have a slight kaeri (return of the hamon). Along the stacked folds of the masame grain toward the mune (back ridge), there are yubashiri (streaks of nie running along the grain lines) with nie present, and... (continues on next page).
